Dancing on Ice fans shocked at Stephen Mulhern’s ‘inappropriate joke on a family show’

On a joke that Stephen Mulhern made on Dancing on Ice (DOI) recently, people have shared their opinions.
Stephen, 47, fronted Sunday night’s episode of the ITV show with his co-host Holly Willoughby, 43. The remaining contestants were introduced by the presenting duo before their most recent performances, and there were some jokes throughout the episode.
Holly made reference to the fact that Chris Taylor and Robin Johnstone’s next routine was set in the Golden Hour by JVKE. Right before the pair took to the ice, she said, “Right, it’s time for our next couple, who are giving us a golden hour.”
In an ostensible remark about the crude act of a “golden shower,” Stephen teased that he had misheard Holly’s statement. He said: “A what”? Holly replied: “A golden hour. It’s the name of a song”. Stephen teased: “Oh, phew! It’s Chris and Robin”. Then, elsewhere in the studio, laughter was audible.
The skit didn’t go unnoticed by viewers, with some sharing their thoughts on X. Celebrity chef Gino D’Acampo was brought up amid concern over the joke. Gino is facing accusations of “distressing” and “sexually inappropriate” behaviour over several shows following an ITV News investigation. “Dozens” of people are said to have detailed experiences described variously as “unacceptable”, “distressing” and “horrendous” while working with him over a period spanning more than 12 years. He has however firmly denied the allegations.
Following Stephen’s comments, one viewer wrote: “With @ITV being in the midst of the Gino scandal, you’d think they’d be a bit more careful about golden shower jokes on a family show”. Someone replied: “He said golden hour”. The original poster responded: “He joked that he’d misheard it as golden shower”. The original post was replaced by another viewer, saying, “I said the same thing.” Mulhern has better take care…”.
One user claimed in a post that Stephen had made an attempt to make the dance appear to be a “golden shower,” but it was a joke. How many did he offend at 18: 30 on a Sunday night? @Ginofantastico #dancingonice”. They also described the joke as “smut” in response to someone else watching.
They wrote in the other post: “But Steve made a very bad joke about it being a ‘ golden shower ‘ it’s a Sunday evening, 6: 30… we don’t need smut”. One fan wrote, “Golden Hour is one of my favorite songs ever! ” in response. Every time I hear it, I think of my mother in real life and it truly captures a “golden hour”! also… I NEED Chris’s outfit IMMEDIATELY”.
The critic was not the only one to react to the sketch involving Stephen and Holly on the most recent DOI weekend episode. One viewer wrote on the platform: “Wasn’t prepared for a golden shower joke at 6.34pm on a Sunday…”
Next Sunday’s broadcast of Dancing on Ice will be on ITV and ITVX.
