Customs Seize 34,470 Litres Of Petrol In Taraba

The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) claims that the operation’s operatives from the Taraba State border communities of Gembu and Kan-Iyaka have intensified their efforts to stop fuel smugglers.
Both Kan-Iyaka, a transit route into Cameroon, and Gembu, the headquarters of Sardauna Local Government Area (LGA), are renowned for their illegal fuel smuggling activities.
The Comptroller General of the Nigerian Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, disclosed that a total of 34, 470 liters of gasoline were quickly taken from smugglers during a public auction of the seized items in Jalingo.

A special-purpose transportation truck used for smuggling was also seized by Customs agents, he added, adding that the operation was carried out in collaboration with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Authority (NMDPRA) and with technical assistance from the Office of the National Security Advisor (ONSA).

Between March 8 and March 9, 2025, our interagency intelligence fusion center discovered unusual movement patterns along the Dorofi and Kan-iyaka axis. Field teams conducted a number of coordinated interceptions that disrupted what appeared to be an emerging smuggling corridor in response to this intelligence mosaic,” he claimed.
“These intelligence-led interventions resulted in the seizure of 1, 149 jerry cans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), each containing 30 liters, giving a total volume of 34, 470 litres.
The seizure, which includes a sophisticated transportation vehicle valued at 4,000,000 Naira (4, 000), equals a total Duty Paid Value of 37.5 million, Seven Hundred and Eighty Thousand, Six Hundred Naira (37, 780, 600), according to the report.
While 180 jerry cans and the transportation vehicle were intercepted while moving forward with the Kan-iyaka border crossing, “the bulk interception occurred in Gembu, which is one of the critical nodal points.”
The Customs boss emphasized that all security agencies should be concerned about smugglers because they pose a threat to the country’s national security.
