Court Strikes Out Suit Seeking To Extend Ex-Rivers LG Chairmen’s Tenures
Chidi Lloyd and 20 other former Rivers council chairmen filed a lawsuit that the Federal High Court’s Abuja division filed to extend their 20-year term after it expired on June 16, 2024.
The former chairmen had filed a lawsuit against the Martin Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly, which claimed to have extended their terms by six months after their three-year, constitutionally-limited three-year terms had expired.
Ruling on the matter with suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/537/2024, Justice James Omotosho on Friday, dismissed the case citing a lack of locus standi.

In his ruling, the judge declared that the former chairmen’s continued office was unlawful because they had no legal right to do so.
The 21 former chairmen ceased to be chairmen when their terms were up, according to Justice Omotosho, and they had no right to protest.
