Costelow injury scare for Wales as Six Nations looms

Just before Warren Gatland names his Six Nations squad, Sam Costelow has worried about Wales’ injury problems.

After just 11 minutes, the Scarlets fly-half suffered a shoulder injury forcing them to withdraw from their defeat in Gloucester in the European Challenge Cup.

Costelow, who wore the Wales number 10 jersey in their last game of 2024 against South Africa, was clearly in pain as he left.

Dwayne Peel, the head coach, said Costelow had “done something decent” when he came off, but he had not made any speculation as to the extent of the injury.

Costelow, who turned 24 on Friday, was replaced by fellow Wales international Ioan Lloyd, who started at full-back at Kingsholm.

However, Gareth Anscombe’s recovery from a knee injury that prevented him from facing Scarlets and Costelow was better.

Gloucester head coach George Skivington said: “Gareth is fine. Since we have cover in that position, we decided there was no need to risk him again this week after he knocked last week. But he doesn’t have any worries.

Prior to his squad announcement on Monday, Wales head coach Gatland was at Kingsholm where hopefuls Max Llewellyn, Freddie Thomas, and Josh Hathaway helped Gloucester defeat Scarlets 31-7.
