Christopher Dean says he and skating partner Jayne Torvill are bowing out “on their own terms” and the journey they have been on “is complete”.

The 1984 Olympic gold medalists have remained big stars thanks to ITV series Dancing On Ice. But they have performed on that show for the last time with the future of the series in serious doubt. And they will now go on one last tour together around the rinks of the UK in April and May before ending their performing for good.

Referring to the tour called Our Last Dance, Chris said: “After the tour finishes in Nottingham, we’ll be hanging up the skates as Torvill and Dean. Will it be a sad moment? Of course!

“We climbed up the mountain, saw the beautiful views, won a few medals and we’re able to bow out on our terms. The journey feels complete.”

Chris, 66, and Jayne met in 1975 at the Nottingham Ice Skating Club and have skated together and been friends ever since. He says he has tried to keep his body like a classic car over the years doing Dancing On Ice and other tours in order to keep going.

He explained: “I like to think of myself as a classic car; keeping me on the road takes a lot of care and attention. Weights and cardio in my little home gym, anti-inflammatories, ice packs and compression sleeves for my creaky knees. At 66, it’s about regular maintenance rather than going for the big burnout.”

Chris also revealed in an interview with Saga magazine he has moved back to the UK from America mainly because he hated the politics there. He had been in Colorado Springs for 23 years.

But he has now been back in Yorkshire full time with partner Karen Barber for several years and said: “Politics in the States wasn’t easy to deal with; it’s very polarised and I worried about saying the wrong thing. We found a place in Yorkshire and, later this year, we’re planning to hit the road in our camper van.”

The pair remain unmarried but there is no sign of them walking down the aisle just yet.

Chris said: “Everybody wants to know if Karen and I are going to get married and I’d like to announce that… at the moment, we’re happy with the way things are. Let’s see what happens.”
