After defeating the Houston Texans in the NFL play-offs, the Kansas City Chiefs moved one step closer to achieving an unprecedented “three-peat.”
The Chiefs opened the Divisional Round on Saturday at home to the Houston Texans after receiving a bye in the first round.
The two-time defending champions of the NFL won a 23-14 victory to maintain their goal of winning three straight Super Bowls.
Kansas City has won the NFL’s championship game three times in a row under the direction of quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Last season, they became the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls since Tom Brady’s New England Patriots in 2004 and 2005, and they are back within one win of the big game.
Travis Kelce’s contribution to Kansas City’s dynasty and the tight end’s touchdown in the fourth quarter earned the team the victory. Kareem Hunt scored their other touchdown, helping them to a 13-6 lead at half-time.
Houston’s kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn spurned two chances to draw level, sending a field goal and extra-point attempt wide, before having a late field-goal attempt blocked.
The Chiefs will now face either the Baltimore Ravens or the Buffalo Bills in their seventh straight AFC Championship game on Sunday, but they ended up being comfortable winners.
