The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, on Monday, defended the appointment of Eric Chelle as the new coach of the Super Eagles.
Dikko, who was a guest on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily breakfast programme, said Chelle proved himself as an exceptional coach, especially with the Malian eagles.
Chelle became the third person to lead the senior men’s national team since Jose Peseiro’s departure, according to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Tuesday.
The decision to hire a former Malian coach to take over the Eagles’ top position, which many Nigerian sports enthusiasts claimed could have been given to Nigerian coaches, has angered many fans.
However, Dikko claimed that the outcry over the new coach’s appointment was normal because every football fan in Nigeria has a coach and what a coach should be.

Dikko claimed that Chelle defeated the Super Eagles in a friendly game as the coach of the Mali side. He claimed Chelle is competent and knowledgeable about African football.
The sports commission said, “We have a World Cup qualifier that is very dicey, very critical. We have three windows to play the qualifiers, there is no window for a friendly match, there is no window for a test match and we are playing, for goodness sake, African countries – we are playing Zimbabwe, Rwanda, South Africa, Lesotho and Benin. Those are co-African countries.
You should judge this coach based on his efforts with the national team, because he is the only person who can come at this time to bring fresh thinking to the team and take the lead of the team, according to the coach. Forget about the club, club football is different, national team is different.
What is the premise of his work with the national team, and how has it been met? When Eric was a Mali coach, he created a very strong team that everyone was afraid to play, including a team that defeated South Africa in a friendly match and that won 14 of his own games with Mali, draw 5, and lose 3 of them, which gives evidence of his dedication to the national team.
” The World Cup qualifiers that we are having, we all have to outscore our opponents, Eric, with Mali, in those 22 matches scored over 40 goals, he conceded only about 12 goals.
