Chappell Roan, a pop superstar, defeated stiff competition from Shaboozey and other current artists Sabrina Carpenter on Sunday to win the Grammy for Best New Artist.

The award marks Roan’s transition from a struggling artist to the It girl in music this year.

The 26-year-old used her acceptance speech to urge the recording industry to promote better social protections and treat struggling artists with more respect.

To cheers from the audience, she said, “I told myself, if I ever won a Grammy and got to stand up here before the most powerful people in music, I would demand that labels in the music business, which make millions of dollars off of artists, provide a livable wage and health care, especially for developing artists.”

She described how challenging it was to get a job after the coronavirus pandemic swept the country after being labeled “zero job experience.”

She said, “It was devastating to feel so strongly about my art and feel so betrayed and dehumanized.”

“Record labels need to treat their artists as valuable employees”, she said. “Labels, we got you, but do you got us”?

The artist, who was born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz on February 19, 1998, started singing and playing the piano when she was just a few months old and started getting attention for the YouTube videos she had when she was just ten.

Before finally making her own with singles like “Pink Pony Club” and “Naked in Manhattan,” which gained new popularity after the release of her debut studio album, she moved to Los Angeles and then returned home to support herself as a barista.

That record, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess”, came out to widespread acclaim, with a number of publications including it in their lists of the year’s top releases

The bold, vulnerable album explores themes of sexuality, heartbreak and yearning with a pop-forward, dance-heavy beat, while also showcasing her impressive vocals that one critic characterized as “singing in cursive”.

Before exuberant performances from Roan, including at major festivals, saw her rise to the top of pop, the album remained largely hidden for a while until a few months after its release.

Her appeal comes from her artistic persona, which frequently combines camp costume design with heavy makeup.

Songs like “Good Luck, Babe”! and “Hot to Go”! went viral, with the former becoming her first Top 10 hit.

Roan has spoken out about the psychological impact of her enormous fame, as well as her public support for the Palestinian people.
