Dorival Junior Sacked As Brazil Coach After Argentina Humiliation

Dorival Junior was on Friday sacked as Brazil coach, three days after a humiliating 4-1 World Cup qualifying defeat by bitter rivals Argentina, the Confederation of Brazilian Football (CBF) announced.

“Dorival Junior is no longer in charge of the Brazilian national team. The management thanks him and wishes him success for the rest of his career”, the CBF said in a statement.

Dorival, 62, had only been in charge since January 2024, succeeding interim coach Fernando Diniz, but has overseen a lacklustre qualifying campaign for the 2026 World Cup finals in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Five-time World Cup winners Brazil are fourth in the South American qualifying table, 10 points behind defending world champions Argentina who have already made sure of their place in the finals.

Brazil also sit behind Ecuador and Uruguay.

There are six automatic qualifying spots for teams from South America.

Brazil will visit Ecuador and host Paraguay on June 4 and 9, respectively, in the next set of qualifiers.

The writing was on the wall for Dorival after Tuesday’s rout in Buenos Aires.

“Nobody expected what we saw today, and the responsibility is entirely mine”, the coach acknowledged after the game.

Dorival took over the Selecao after winning domestic titles with Flamengo and Sao Paulo.

His appointment was announced only after months of speculation about the possible arrival of Real Madrid’s Italian coach, Carlo Ancelotti.

Brazilian media claim that Ancelotti is again among the targets to succeed Dorival as is Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus, currently in charge of Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

Fellow Portuguese Abel Ferreira, who won numerous titles with Brazilian club Palmeiras, has also been linked with the job.

Ancelotti dismissed the speculation on Friday, saying he intended to see out his contract in Madrid which runs until June 2026, despite his “affection for Brazil, its players, and its fans”.

Dorival’s debut saw a victory against England at Wembley with a goal from teenage star Endrick.

However, any hopes of a new golden age of football for the spiritual home of the game, were dashed by a miserable performance at the 2024 Copa America.

At that tournament, Brazil limped into the knockout stages after just one win and two draws in their group campaign.

They then lost to Uruguay in a penalty shootout after a 0-0 draw in the quarter-finals.

Adding insult to injury, Argentina went on to claim the title.

Other low points followed — a 1-0 defeat in Paraguay and a 1-1 draw against Venezuela in World Cup qualifiers.

Performances left fans bemused that Dorival was unable to bring the best out of talented players such as Vinícius Junior, Rodrygo and Raphinha.

Also missing was the traditional art and panache demanded by the team’s fans.

Adding to Dorival’s headaches was the fading talents of 33-year-old Neymar, Brazil’s all-time leading scorer who has been plagued by physical ailments.

Back in Brazil, at his boyhood club Santos, Neymar hoped to make his comeback to the national team after more than a year out due to a serious knee injury.

However, he missed the last two matches against Colombia (a 2-1 victory) and the rout in Argentina due to a thigh problem.

Whoever succeeds Dorival, the task will be to resurrect the style and bring a first title back to the country since the 2019 Copa America.

Dorival had hinted at the obstacles facing Brazil, who were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, as they limped through the ongoing qualifying round.

He insisted that the football “world order” was changing and that the five-time champions and Argentina could not just expect to waltz past regional rivals.

“South American football has grown a lot overall. If you look at the majority of the national line-ups, you see players playing in teams all over the world, which wasn’t the case until recently”, he said in an interview in November.

“The top teams haven’t had as much room to grow, while the teams at the bottom are starting to make interesting and big strides. This is levelling things a lot and making the matches tighter contests”.

Mateta ‘Ready’ To Return For Palace In FA Cup After Horror Injury

After suffering a horrifying ear injury in the previous round, Jean-Philippe Mateta is “ready” to play for Crystal Palace in their FA Cup quarter-final against Fulham on Saturday.

In Palace’s FA Cup fifth-round victory on March 1 after being kicked in the head by Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts, Mateta needed 25 stitches to his left ear.

Roberts was given a lengthy six-game suspension after catching Mateta as he ran out of the net.

The 27-year-old French striker has missed a game that included a two-week international break.

Mateta has 15 goals in all competitions this season, according to Palace manager Oliver Glasner, who confirmed on Friday that the weekend game will be played at Craven Cottage.

The Austrian remarked, “Oh no, he’s been training with us for two weeks.” It’s important for him to train a little bit, he says, “Of course, always with his protection.”

He said, “We had a game inside of us during the international break where he could play for 60 minutes without any issues.” He’s ready. “

When Fulham comes to play, Mateta will wear a protective mask.

Because he is tall enough, I told him to try water polo, “said Glasner.” He claims to be comfortable despite the appearance of something strange.

“Let’s see, tomorrow when he scores a header, it was the right mask and protection,” he said.

Steve Parish, the chairman of the Palace, described the situation as the “most reckless challenge” he had ever seen, but Mateta claimed there was “too much emotion” in the midst of the battle.

When Liam texted me while I was in the hospital, I said, “It’s okay, it’s football,” Mateta told Sky Sports. He thanked me. He was concerned.

‘We Don’t Deserve Bonus’- Man City Boss Guardiola

Even if Manchester City salvaged a disappointing season by winning the Club World Cup, manager Pep Guardiola has admitted that he and his players do not deserve a bonus.

Guardiola’s team are currently fifth in the Premier League and has lost both the Champions League and League Cup.

City, who have won the English title for the previous four years, could finish the year without a major trophy for the first time since Guardiola’s inaugural season in charge in 2016/17.

With a quarter-final match against Bournemouth looming on Sunday, their only chance of capturing domestic silverware is in the FA Cup.

Guardiola believes City are performing so poorly that they will not deserve a bonus from the large prize pool at the post-season tournament in the United States, even if they win the FA Cup or the Club World Cup in June and July.

The Club World Cup winners will receive up to $125 million in prize money, with a total prize pot of $1 billion going to the 32 participating clubs, according to FIFA, the world’s governing body.

This season, we don’t deserve it. This season, we don’t deserve a bonus. Guardiola stated to reporters on Friday, “I don’t know how much if we win,” but the club benefits.

Ex-Barcelona Star Dani Alves Has Rape Conviction Annulled

A Spanish appeals court overturned former Brazilian football player Dani Alves’ conviction for rape on Friday, arguing that his trial had “shortcomings” and “inaccuracies” and was biased.

A young woman raped in a Barcelona nightclub’s VIP bathroom on December 31, 2022, and Alves was given a four-and-a-half year jail sentence in February of that year.

After posting the one million euros ($1.1 million) bail set by the court, the 41-year-old, who won the Champions League three times with Barcelona, was released from jail in March. He is currently appealing his release.

The player’s conviction was “annulled” by the appeals court, which according to the appeals court’s four judges “unanimously” accepted.

The court also rejected the public prosecutors’ appeal for a nine-year, more severe jail term.

In its decision, the court said that Alves’ trial contained “a number of gaps, inaccuracies, inconsistencies, and contradictions regarding the facts, the legal assessment, and its consequences.”

According to the prosecution’s witness statements, the victim claimed that Alves had violently forced her to have sex despite begging him to let her go, causing her “anguish and terror” while she testified behind a screen to protect her identity during the trial.

Alves first claimed he had never met the woman, but later later claimed they had sex over a sexual encounter.

The victim’s attorneys claimed during the trial that she had been “glued” to the player while dancing in a nightclub.

Alves was a key member of a formidable Barcelona team that won 126 caps for Brazil and the Copa America twice, winning the title six times.

Along with Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus, he also won European league titles.

Real Madrid Coach Ancelotti To Face Trial For Alleged Tax Fraud

The Madrid court hearing on Friday announced that legendary coach Carlo Ancelotti will go on trial next week for allegedly failing to report income to the country’s tax office.

The 65-year-old Italian is accused of having allegedly cost Spain’s Treasury more than one million euros ($1.1 million) in unreported earnings from image rights in 2014 and 2015 and is being sentenced to four years and nine months in prison.

According to a court spokesman, the trial will begin on Wednesday and will likely last two days.

Ancelotti, who has won a total of five Champions League titles, including three with Real, must be present, he added.

Even though he himself claimed to be a tax resident in Spain and indicated that his residence was in Madrid, the prosecution accuses him of only declaring the personal remuneration received from Real Madrid in his tax returns for those two years.

They accuse Ancelotti of allegedly starting a “confusing” and “complex” system of shell companies to stifle his extra income from both his image rights and those of others, including real estate.

Ancelotti&nbsp was ordered to go on trial for the affair in a Spanish court in 2023, but there was no fix date.

When asked about the case, Angelotti claimed last year that the affair was “an old story that I hope will be resolved soon.”

He joined Real Madrid in 2013, leaving in May 2015, and then became a Bayern Munich employee the following year.

The former international midfielder from Italy, who won the European Cup twice with AC Milan before making his Real Madrid debut in 2021.

Along with his success in the Champions League, he has also won domestic titles with Real Madrid and Milan, Chelsea in England, Bayern Munich in Germany, and Paris Saint-Germain in France.

Spain Bid To Host 2035 Women’s Football World Cup

Spain, Portugal, and Morocco will submit an application to host the 2035 Women’s World Cup, according to the Spanish football federation (RFEF) on Friday.

“The FIFA World Cup, the most significant sporting event in the world, is the best way to raise the profile of women’s sport,” says one expert. On the sidelines of a conference held at the University of Madrid, Rafael Louzan, president of RFEF, stated that “we are currently working on it.”

Following a number of recent non-sporting scandals, the Spanish federation is doing their part to restore the organization’s reputation.

After forcibly kissing World Cup champion Jenni Hermoso on the lips following Spain’s victory in Sydney in September 2023, former president Luis Rubiales resigned in disgrace.

After initially taking over the reins on an interim basis, his successor Pedro Rocha, who was suspended in December 2024, was replaced with Louzan.

In a new format, Spain will host the 2030 men’s World Cup along with Morocco and Portugal in the first group of matches that will take place in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay to mark the centenary of the first competition.
