Manchester United Dent Arsenal’s Title Bid With Late Win

Arsenal’s title struggle was ended by Manchester United’s superb goal in a thrilling 3-2 victory over the league leaders on Sunday.

Arsenal were level at the Emirates Stadium when Lisandro Martinez’ own goal came from Bryan Mbeumo before half-time.

After the break, United held on in command thanks to Patrick Dorgu’s brilliant effort, but it appeared as though Mikel Merino’s late goal had saved the team.

Brazilian forward Cunha scored the winning goal three minutes into the game with a stunning drive.

Since losing to Aston Villa in December, Arsenal has lost just 13 games overall.

The Gunners lost to Bournemouth in May, their first home defeat in all 18 games.

Arsenal are currently four points clear of second-placed Manchester City and third-placed Aston Villa, who both won this weekend to close the gap with victories over Wolves and Newcastle, respectively.

Arsenal’s three-game winless run in the league has given the title race new life, despite Pep Guardiola’s statement that the city boss is the “best team in the world.”

Arsenal still have control over their destiny, but their goalless draws against Liverpool and Nottingham Forest raised concerns for their anxious fans. As a result, boss Mikel Arteta’s situation is even more worrying.

Arsenal, who haven’t won the title in 22 years, will have to put their nerves to the test in the upcoming weeks after squandering significant lead in previous title races, have not lifted a trophy since the 2020 FA Cup.

Michael Carrick’s impressive start to his interim administration was continued by United’s first victory at the Emirates Stadium since December 2017.

Carrick, who was hired to replace Ruben Amorim temporarily, began his tenure with a surprise 2-0 victory over Manchester City over the weekend.

After Amorim’s turbulent reign in charge, he has already won over the top two to propel United to fourth place.

Sting in the story

In the 29th minute, Arsenal’s unrelenting pressure came to an end.

Dorgu’s inability to clear from Piero Hincapie’s cross caused United to concede a pathetic goal.

Bukayo Saka pounced and headed his cross past Martin Odegaard, but the Arsenal captain misjudged his effort, and Martinez made a hash of clearing under the pressure of Jurrien Timber, who had forced the United defender to release the ball.

In their previous two league games, Arsenal had not allowed a shot on target.

However, the Gunners did the same with an even more careless error in the 37th minute if Arsenal’s opener had been gifted-wrapped by United.

Mbeumo seized on Zubimendi’s woefully subdued back pass before firing home after circling Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.

Since joining United in his first season, Mbeumo’s ninth goal in all competitions continued the Cameroon forward’s gradual progress.

Five minutes later, Carrick’s men had completely lost their grip on the game.

Dorgu was picked out by Bruno Fernandes, who took a touch before lashing into the top corner from 20 yards.

Arsenal requested a handball in Dorgu, but VAR authorized the goal to stand as a shiver of concern rose over the Emirates Stadium.

The 21-year-old’s second goal in a row demonstrated Carrick’s decision to switch him from the defensive position to an attacking one.

Arsenal, to their credit, refused to surrender and scored the equalizer in the 84th minute.

As Lammens failed to capture Saka’s corner and Merino bundled home from close range, another Arsenal set-piece caused the damage.

However, the 87th minute’s story for Arsenal had a sting.

Cunha and Fernandes both scored from 25 yards before firing a superb strike past Raya.

Senegal Goal Hero Admits AFCON Final Walk-Off Was ‘A Mistake’

In an interview with French television on Sunday, Pape Gueye from Senegal revealed the walk-off between his country and Morocco and the subsequent missed penalty.

In a contentious game played in Rabat last week, Gueye scored the winning goal.

The eventual winners of the late penalty walk-off, which resulted in a 20-minute delay, awarded to Morocco.

Brahim Diaz reacted to his penalty, and Gueye added the winning goal in extra time.

The 26-year-old midfielder Gueye remarked, “We are only humans, we realized our mistake and came out.”

He continued, “Anyone can make a mistake.”

Sadio Mane, a former Liverpool star, remained on the field and was urged by Gueye to get his teammates to play again for the penalty.

Senegal were already furious after a soft-looking foul minutes earlier had been used to disqualify a goal.

He said, “He found the right thing at the right moment, and it shows how significant he is to us,” he said.

We owe him a large thank you.

Gueye expressed surprise that Diaz dared to execute a disastrous Panenka penalty.

He said, “I wouldn’t have risked that myself,” and it was courageous.

Djokovic, Alcaraz Into Melbourne Last Eight As Next Gen Roars

Coco Gauff had to fight in Melbourne Park, where the brutal heat of the day earlier had eased to 22C.

At Rod Laver Arena, top seed Alcaraz delivered a masterclass of ominous touch, beating the American Tommy Paul 7-6 (8 / 6), 6-4, 7-5.

The 22-year-old defeated sixth seed Alex de Minaur, who defeated eighth seed Alexander Bublik in straight sets, against home hope.

Jakub Mensik and Djokovic were scheduled to face off in the last 16 on Monday, but the Czech international pulled out with an injury.

For a place in the semi-finals, Djokovic will face American Taylor Fritz or Italian Lorenzo Musetti, who is ninth seed.

Alcaraz has never left the quarter-finals in Melbourne, which is unusual for the Spaniard, who like Djokovic has not dropped a set this year.

He will become the youngest person to have won a career Grand Slam of all four majors if he can finally defeat his Australian duck.

The Spaniard’s serving technique has historically struggled with precision and consistency.

He has been compared to Djokovic’s serve, which has now been a useful tool.

After making light work of 19th seed Paul, he said, “you have to pay me,” he said in his on-court interview to the cheers of the adoring crowd.

Alexander Zverev next faces American Learner Tien, who was well defeated by Jannik Sinner in the final last year.

In straight sets, Germany’s third seed destroyed Francisco Cerundolo, Argentina’s 18th seed.

The 25th seed Daniil Medvedev, a three-time finalist, defeated surprisingly easy Tien in a surprisingly easy three-set victory.

Despite having a nosebleed in the first set that required lengthy medical attention, Tien, 20, made it to his first Grand Slam quarter-final.

Later, he claimed that his nose was simply dry.

The crowd has been amazing every year since I’ve been here, said Tien, who is the youngest men’s quarter-finalist at Melbourne Park since Nick Kyrgios in 2015.

“It means the world to me to do this in this place with this much enthusiasm and support.”

Sabalenka Teen Test

In a tasty last-eight fight, world number one Sabalenka will square off against impressive American Iva Jovic, age 18.

Sabalenka, a two-time Melbourne champion, defeated 19-year-old Canadian Victoria Mboko in a fierce match to win the Belarusian top seed.

Sabalenka defeated unseeded Yulia Putintseva 6-1, 7-6 (7/1) in just 53 dominant minutes, while Jovic defeated her.

The 17th-seeded Canadian Mboko, who has come under fire for being a serious threat in the past year, described Sabalenka as “an incredible player for such a young age.”

She put in incredible tennis for me today.

Sabalenka won the second set tiebreak, which was her 20th Grand Slam tiebreak in a row.

As her title charge progresses, she hasn’t dropped a set.

But in Jovic, who turned 18 last month, she squares off with a player who is in top form and quickly rising, who is currently ranked 27 and was 191 this year.

Jovic, who stunned seventh-seeded Jasmine Paolini, two-time Grand Slam champion, and other competitors in the third round, asserted that she does not believe in herself as a winner.

She continued, “This is just another week where I’m winning more matches.”

Since Venus Williams did it in 1998, Jovic is the youngest player to reach the women’s quarter-finals of the Australian Open without giving a set.

Elina Svitolina from Ukraine will face third-seeded American Gauff.

Russian Mirra Andreeva defeated the 12-year-old Svitolina 6-2, 6-4, in a match against the Russian.

Gauff fought her way past Karolina Muchova 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, after dropping a set for the second time in a row.
