Sunderland win continues strong start for promoted trio

Sunderland are dominating the Premier League after six games.

The Black Cats are now enjoying being back in the spotlight after eight years, with victories over Nottingham Forest putting them in the Champions League top four.

Few would anticipate them remaining there in May, but Regis le Bris’ side has every reason to be optimistic with three victories already in hand.

After the City Ground’s 1-0 victory, Le Bris said, “We know we have to work together, to suffer together.”

“We defended really well and our five subs really helped,” I’m proud of it. I believe there could still be improvement with the ball.

Although there is room for improvement, the current performance suggests that there won’t be another Premier League season when all three promoted teams have already fallen.

Only five times have the promoted teams started the season with a better start.

At least two of the three promoted sides have continued to perform well after the end of the season because a strong start to the campaign indicates how well their chances of survival are improving.

Sunderland have started the best of the three, collecting 11 points from their first six games, which is the most any promoted side has scored in 13 years, compared to West Ham, who did the same in 2012-13.

Only two promoted teams have ever started a Premier League season with a better start, and both did so in the early stages of the competition, where the gap between the promoted and established teams was arguably less significant.

The odd thing is that of the seven teams that had 11 or more points in their first six games, Sunderland was one of them.

While Sunderland and every other Premier League team have already accumulated points, this is not true.

Why, then, has the trio from this season started so much better than Leicester, Ipswich, and Southampton did a year ago?

Because they have allowed 32 fewer chances to score eight goals and conceded eight fewer goals in their series of matches, which has resulted in significantly more success keeping Premier League opponents at bay.

We are not ruthless enough – Postecoglou

Fans of Nottingham Forest are beginning to understand how important it is to dominate games, create lots of chances, and ultimately fall short of winning.

Postecoglou has endured a terrible run since taking over as manager of his first home team, winning five games without winning in his fifth game. That is the result of his appointment on September 9.

Even the Australian was aware that his appointment was not exactly “love at first sight” as many Forest fans were concerned.

Fans who questioned the substitution of Nuno Espirito Santo to Postecoglou won’t have had their doubts squelched by Forest only drawing one point from games against two newly promoted teams, including a 1-1 draw at Burnley on September 20.

Forest managed 39 attempts in total in their two matches against Burnley and Sunderland, which underlines their goal issues.

After Sunderland fell, Postecoglou said, “We are simply not ruthless enough to turn our dominance into wins.”

“From our perspective, I must sort that out. The players are mentally sane and focused. In the last three and a half weeks, a lot has happened.

I’ve been saying that the players are accepting any changes they are making and that they can’t dwell on them.

How concerned should Forest supporters be?

Before Postecoglou’s appointment, Forest’s poor form dates back:

The main issue is their inability to score goals, according to Postecoglou, who added that “we have the foundation to win games of football but we are not and we need to change that.”

Will Postecoglou turn things around? “I’m sure they’ll kick on.”

According to the statistics, Postecoglou has already increased Nottingham Forest’s attack-mindedness over the course of Nuno’s tenure.

Before he was fired, the Portuguese coach’s side had 31 attempts on goal in their three Premier League games, including a game against Arsenal away, while their team had 44 attempts in Postecoglou’s three games so far this season, which includes an away game against Arsenal.

The key is turning those efforts into objectives, and some of those who have watched Forest under Postecoglou have faith in the future.

Andy Reid, a former Nottingham Forest midfielder, said on Sky Sports following the defeat to Sunderland that “Forest had plenty of chances.”

Reid’s performance in Wednesday’s 2-2 Europa League draw away at Real Betis gave him encouragement from the match on Saturday.

I’ve seen enough to indicate that Forest fans, players, and manager are going to be okay, he said.

Of course, it’s disappointing, but I can see enough from that game and the other games, which were occasionally excellent against Betis, that things will start to progress.

Chris Wood, a Forest striker, added: “We need to take those chances,” scoring 20 Premier League goals last season. In the end, you pay a price for winning games comfortably.

Never seen a referee kick that far back?

Fans were also outraged at the decision to give Sunderland the free kick that made the goal as well as their frustration at a second-successive home loss when they walked out of the City Ground on Saturday.

After he had cleared the ball just outside his area before he appeared to be caught by Trai Hume attempting to block, Nicolas Dominguez was given a penalty for simulation.

Omar Alderete scored from Granit Xhaka’s free kick and Dominguez was booked.

The Forest players expressed anger over the decision, and defender Neco Williams remarked, “We should have defended it better, but at the same time, I’ve never seen a referee give one of those free kicks before in all my time of playing football.

He made contact, so he made the mistake, and I was held back for the goal. He had two arms encircling my waist, which was a crucial component of their goal.

“It’s two poor decisions, especially those made by the referee and then the VAR users.”

Postecoglou continued, “It was a number of decisions from the officials, some of which involved holding the box while others involved in awarding it.”

Israel-Premier Tech barred from race over protest fears

Images courtesy of Getty

Due to concerns about public safety, the Israel-Premier Tech cycling team was withdrawn from the Giro dell’Emilia in Bologna for the upcoming month.

The team was targeted by pro-Palestinian protests opposing Israel’s occupation of Gaza at the Vuelta a Espana this month, leading to the decision.

The final stage of the race was abandoned after protesters entered a portion of the course in Spain, which was the subject of a number of incidents.

After pro-Palestinian protesters clashed with police in Milan on Monday during a nationwide strike called by trade unions against Israel’s conduct in Gaza, there are concerns that the race in Italy on October 4th could experience similar disruptions.

The cycling team informed Israel-Premier Tech that the Giro dell’Emilia invitation had been withdrawn.

The organizers cited security concerns that were linked to planned protests that threatened to stymie the race. Our sport has been severely harmed by threats of violence, which we find regrettable.

Adriano Amici, the race’s organizer, stated that “for the safety of all athletes, technical staff, and spectators,” it was decided to exclude Israel-Premier Tech.

Bologna’s traditional autumn race, the Giro dell’Emilia, concludes near the city’s historic center, which has a sizable student population and a long history of left-wing politics.

In recent days, various organizations in Bologna have made threats to halt the race.

Despite being asked to stage sporting boycotts, the UCI, the world’s governing body for cycling, announced on Friday that it would continue to welcome Israeli competitors at its competitions.

The title sponsor of the Israel-Premier Tech squad urged the team to remove the word “Israel” from their name this week.

The team is owned by Israeli-Canadian property billionaire Sylvan Adams and includes five British riders, including four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome.

There have been growing calls for Israel to be expelled from international football competition since the UN commission of inquiry officially declared that it had committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Israel denies this.

One senior player at the national football association has informed the BBC that the leadership of the ruling body Uefa wants to take action and that many nations are pushing for a vote on whether to remove Israel from European football.

In response to the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of about 1,200 people and the hostage of 251, the Israeli military launched a campaign in Gaza.

How cracks have appeared between Maresca and Chelsea

Chelsea’s excitement over the Club World Cup is fading, and Enzo Maresca, the manager, seems to have had a change of heart.

After a red card in a second successive match, which allowed Brighton to come from behind to win 3-1 at Stamford Bridge, the Italian saw his team leave the field to a smattering of boos on Saturday.

After winning the Conference League, qualifying for the Champions League, and lifting the Club World Cup, Maresca was at his best.

However, he has started to show signs of cracks and made comments in recent weeks that will not have impressed his bosses.

After Brighton beat, five of them, including co-owner Behdad Eghbali, co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, recruitments managers Sam Jewell and Joe Shields, and co-owners Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, entered the dressing room.

Maresca, however, quickly reaffirmed that was acceptable.

He claimed that they have always used the restroom.

“We have a meeting room in the changing room where we can discuss the game after every game.” Nothing about it altered.

The Blues lost the game after substitutes Danny Welbeck and Maxim de Cuyper scored in stoppage time to pay for Trevoh Chalobah’s 53rd-minute red card.

According to what information, Chelsea has set Maresca as the 2015 Champions League qualifying goal with the intention of reviewing it at the end of the campaign.

Maresca will be aware that pressure is increasing naturally given that she has only eight points from six games and two Premier League defeats in a row.

Alan Shearer, a pundit for BBC Match of the Day, said: “I think once you accept that position, you know you are under pressure if you lose games, and they have lost two.

That’s the management’s rule, I suppose, but it’s more important at Chelsea. You can’t lose games, and they have now lost two, so I think you are aware of the situation.

The club “did not mention anything,” the club claimed.

Maresca appears to have recently addressed the Chelsea hierarchy in front of the media in public.

His initial appearance was in mid-August, and it concerned his defensive choices.

Maresca sought to replace injured defender Levi Colwill, who had been sidelined for the majority of the season due to a knee injury.

He was instructed to work with other players like Chalobah, Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Josh Acheampong, and Jorrel Hato, who were also Chelsea signings.

The club is completely aware of my opinion, Maresca told the media.

He continued, stating that no one else besides Tosin Adarabioyo, who is currently injured, could match Colwill’s ability to perform the job.

He responded, “You like to talk about central defenders? ” when asked again by BBC Sport about signing a defender. I’ve already spoken. Thank you very much.

Instead, Chelsea paid $40 million for Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho, who has featured in just one league game as a substitute.

Since being called out of his loan at Sunderland after Liam Delap injured a hamstring, Marc Guiu hasn’t played any football while academy product Acheampong, who is highly regarded at the club, has hardly ever been called upon.

Maresca said of Liverpool in his press conference following their recent win at Lincoln: “If they continue in this way, I think it is impossible to catch them, not just for us, but for all the clubs.”

The players they have chosen to buy show the club’s desire to return for the Premier League and Champions League, which is quite obvious. “They have been doing a fantastic job since last year.

That contrasts sharply with his comments following Brighton’s defeat, in which he claimed the squad’s lack of experience was making costly errors.

He also suggested that he should not make any decisions regarding recalling defender Axel Disasi, who was previously a member of the so-called “bomb squad,” adding: “The club didn’t mention nothing, so there is no news.

Delap has joined Maresca on the sidelines with his four key central defenders and veteran attacker Cole Palmer, who both have injury issues.

What the fans said, “Chelsea have themselves to blame”

These contributions were made on Saturday’s Premier League live feed:

Saqib: Chelsea is terrible, and our lack of experience has cost us once more.

Harry: Chelsea lacks a lot of skilled, senior professionals. They need to switch to some proven, collected, and calm defenders and midfielders and stop operating as a business for a while. Buy a new keeper for the love of everything. They lack such a sense of discipline.

Alex: Chelsea will need to employ a proven, vocal, and knowledgeable centre-back, or two, if they want to make any of their recent lucrative business profitable. This young person needs it most.

Cian: Chelsea is only to blame themselves once more. We are unable to stop the game while we are in control.

Louie, you’d think Maresca would have taken lessons from Maresca’s red card from the previous game. Who wasn’t a striker in the first place and does all the hard work once more with his subs, leaving Joao Pedro to do it alone? In my opinion, this is the beginning of Maresca’s era.

Mike: Maresca and his tactics were not liked by many Chelsea fans last year, but his success did some people’s business. This season has been terrible! Lucky to win the opening game against Palace. He must leave now.

Maresca must leave, John. Given the amount of money spent, terrible.
