Statutory Delegates Will Participate In Party Primaries Next Year, Says Akpabio

The 2022 Electoral Act’s strong predictions for reinstatement of statutory delegates in political party primaries prior to the 2027 general elections are clear.

Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Senate, made this known on Monday at a meeting with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) leadership in Abuja.

The 2022 Electoral Act’s omission of statutory delegates from party primaries was criticized by Akpabio as a costly error that needs to be fixed before the next round of elections.

The lawmaker said, “There were shortcomings in the previous Electoral Act that need to be addressed. We unintentionally produced what I might refer to as super-delegates in the 2023 elections and the 2022 primaries. statutory delegates, including the president, vice president, governors, deputy governors, members of parliament, and local council chairs, were exempt from the primaries without any express intention from the parliament.

He argued that democracy is less participatory because of this exclusion, which reduces the number of candidates who were chosen.

Numbers are the foundation of democracy. When statutory delegates were left out, that meant that they had no say in choosing party flag bearers for legislative, governorship, and presidential elections unless they contested as ad hoc delegate. He remarked, “We need to fix this.”

Additionally, Akpabio stated that the 2022 Electoral Act’s provisions for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would be reviewed by the National Assembly.

He continued, “It appeared as though INEC served as the primary arbitrator for candidate selection rather than the political parties.” We must make sure that parties have the authority to choose candidates with the best intentions and track records to deliver democratic benefits to the electorate.

In addition to calling for electoral reforms, Akpabio also urged the NBA to sanitize the legal profession, highlighting the existence of dishonest attorneys without proper credentials.

According to the Senate president, some prominent legal professionals never actually received their bar.

Senator Akpabio told the NBA delegate, “It is the duty of the NBA to eradicate such liars in order to defend the integrity of the profession.”

In his response, NBA President Afam Osigwe (SAN) urged the National Assembly to use the ongoing constitutional amendment process to implement reforms in the justice system.

NBA Calls For Due Process In Rivers Political Crisis

Politicians in Rivers State are being urged to refrain from involving the judiciary in their political disputes by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

The chairmen of the eight NBA branches in Rivers State made the point during a joint press briefing that the judiciary must continue to function as a free and impartial branch of the government.

The National Judicial Council (NJC) is the only body under the law that has the authority to handle disciplinary matters involving judges.
They warned that any attempt to circumvent the NJC and involve security agencies in judicial officer investigations would set a dangerous precedent and stifle the rule of law.

The chairmen urged the Rivers State House of Assembly to reconsider its resolution, which directed the Department of State Security (DSS) to investigate the Chief Judge and gave them a chance to let the NJC handle the situation in accordance with established legal procedures.

The chairmen also made an appeal to all parties involved in the political crisis in Rivers to give the state’s and its citizens’ best interests precedence. They urged the people of Nigeria to acknowledge the crucial role that Rivers State plays in the country’s economy and warned that law and order could collapse if the crisis were to worsen, with disastrous consequences for the entire country.

Cleric, Another Remanded Over Alleged Murder Of LASU Graduate

Adedamola Ogunbode, a graduate of Lagos State University (LASU), is one of the four suspects who has been detained by the Nigerian Correctional Service in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The Celestial Church of Christ, Ileri-Oluwa Parish, Ojo, Sunday Whepetoji, and one Sheriff Adebayo were both imprisoned after failing to have their warrants renewed by a Lagos magistrate’s court in Yaba.

As the investigation progressed, the police had requested a court order to keep the suspect in their custody, but the court decided that the pair should be remanded in the Ikoyi Correctional Center.

Two months after he disappeared, Adedamola’s body was excavated last week from a shallow grave by homicide detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti.

His killers, who had his phone stolen and had to transfer money from his account to his graveyard, then laid him to rest nearby the church. The deceased later vanished after telling his girlfriend he was going to the church on January 16 allegedly at the pastor’s invitation.

Adebayo, a church member, sent N70, 000 to the pastor’s personal account.

Ogunbode, a graduate of LASU’s political science program, was on the phone with his girlfriend when he arrived at the church’s grounds and had previously disclosed where he was before she vanished.

Whepetoji was apprehended by detectives during the course of the investigation after his family complained, but he denied ever seeing the victim.

The Ojo police station immediately received a report of the January incident as a missing person case. However, when the new Lagos Police Commissioner Olohundare Jimoh took office with the directive to conduct a thorough investigation of the murder and find the victim’s whereabouts, it only received the necessary attention.

The State Criminal and Investigation Department detained three suspects shortly after, including Ajisomo Olaoluwatomi, 25, and Sheriff Adebayo, who is alleged to be the prime suspect and the one who issued the order for Ogunbode’s execution.

I See No Opponent Against My Re-Election, Says Soludo

In the wake of the governor’s challenge on November 8, 2025, governor Chukwuma Soludo said he sees no qualified opponent in the state’s election.

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), argued that the state’s Ndi Anambra (the state’s citizens) are convinced that his party has produced benefits of democracy and deserves to have another chance in the upcoming election.

In a media conference to mark his third year, Soludo claimed that the people of the South-East state are party loyal to APGA when it comes to the election process for governor and local government chairmen.

He said, “If there is an election, I mean there will be an election, and I will be on the ballot after that, and I will ask: Who else is running?” Which political party is putting up a candidate?

I have not heard of any people until they come down from somewhere, though.
