Two Dead, Three Critically Injured In Lagos Auto Accident

Two people have died, and three others are critically injured in a tragic accident at the Iyana Meiran area of Lagos State.

Disclosing this in a statement on Wednesday, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority said the accident involved a Sino truck, three tricycles, and a minibus in the Iyana Meiran area of Lagos State.

The statement, however, added that the injured victims have been evacuated to the nearest hospital for medical attention.

“Preliminary security findings revealed that the tragic occurrence was triggered by a Dangote Silo Mixer Truck which, while being operated at an inordinately high speed, suffered a sudden brake failure and consequently lost control,” the statement read.

“The runaway truck forcefully rammed into a commercial mini-bus, popularly referred to as Korope (EPP 541 YF), as well as four tricycles (Marwa) KTU 360 QN, LND 444 QL, LSR 444 QN, and EKY 122 QP. The violent impact culminated in extensive destruction, trapping commuters amid mangled vehicles and twisted wreckage.

“Exhibiting exceptional professionalism, promptness, and operational dexterity, LASTMA personnel swiftly mobilised to the accident scene and with the invaluable assistance of public-spirited passersby, successfully rescued and evacuated three severely injured victims who were trapped within the crushed vehicles.

“To ensure the safety of responders and forestall secondary collisions, the Authority immediately cordoned off the entire corridor and instituted comprehensive traffic control and diversion measures.”

The latest accident comes days after two people were killed and two others seriously injured in separate midnight crashes in Lagos on Monday, prompting the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to warn motorists against reckless speeding.

According to LASTMA, the first fatal accident occurred around 2:30 a.m. at Otedola Bridge inward Berger on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, where an unregistered vehicle rammed into a moving trailer at high speed.

Malami Accuses EFCC Chair Olukoyede Of Bias

In response to allegations of bias and conflict of interest, former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has demanded that Olanipekun Olukoyede, the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), be immediately fired from all matters involving him.

The former AGF argued in a statement made on Tuesday by Malami’s Special Assistant for Media, Mohammed Bello Doka, that the EFCC chairman’s continued involvement is “legally untenable, morally indefensible, and constitutionally impermissible,” making reference to Chapter 9 of the Justice Ayo Salami Judicial Commission of Inquiry Report.

While serving as Attorney-General, Malami supervised the establishment of the Justice Ayo Salami Judicial Commission of Inquiry to look into allegations of corruption and abuse of office, according to the statement. The current EFCC chairman was the commission’s secretary at the time, according to the report.

According to the statement, Chapter 9 of the Salami Report addressed senior EFCC officials’ conduct and responsibilities and created what it called “personal and professional exposure” for some people who are currently presiding over Malami.

It claimed that this circumstance “raises a reasonable suspicion of bias” and transforms ongoing EFCC actions into “retaliatory persecution rather than neutral law enforcement.”

Ngige pleads not guilty to an eight-count charge, also available for reading.

The office argued that the applicable standard does not establish actual malice but whether a reasonable observer would recognize bias based on established legal principles that were established upon recusal.

Under the current EFCC leadership, Malami is alleged to be unable to receive an impartial investigation or prosecution.

The statement also made allegations of violations of Malami’s fundamental rights, including the right to a fair hearing under Sections 35 and 36 of the 1999 Constitution, as well as what it termed a “trial by media” through selective leaks and public commentary.

Additionally, it charged the EFCC with harassing its employees without arraignment, criminalizing lawful actions taken while Malami was in office, and continuing to pursue the issue through untimely media exposure.

The former attorney-general is willing to undergo a fair and impartial investigation and be tried before a court of competent jurisdiction, but it rejects what it refers to as political settlements or intimidation, according to the office, which reiterated Malami’s position.

The EFCC chairman was ordered to recuse himself from all Malami-related matters, request the Federation’s current Attorney-General to transfer the case to an independent investigative body, and demand the EFCC’s request to immediately file any charges, if necessary, with a competent court.

Police Arrest TikToker Peller For Attempted Suicide

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested and detained popular TikTok streamer Habeeb Hamzat, popularly known as Peller, following a viral video showing him driving and threatening to crash his car while livestreaming.

His action resulted in a road crash on the Lekki-Epe Expressway in Lagos.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, the force said the arrest followed the circulation of a video recorded on Sunday, in which the 20-year-old content creator was seen driving  while visibly distressed, eventually crashing his vehicle.

According to the police, the suspect’s actions amounted to an alleged attempt to commit suicide and posed a grave danger to other road users.

“The Lagos State Police Command has arrested and detained, for further investigation, Habeeb Hamzat, also known as ‘Peller’, subsequent to a viral video that surfaced online on Sunday, December 14, 2025, in which he was seen driving recklessly, leading to a dangerous road crash while the incident was being live-streamed,” the statement read in part.

“His action constitutes a deliberate attempt to commit suicide and endangered the lives of other innocent road users,” it added.

The police disclosed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for detailed investigation, adding that the outcome would be made public and the suspect charged before a court of competent jurisdiction in line with the law.

The Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, also issued a warning to social media influencers and the public against using online platforms to promote or engage in dangerous conduct.

“Such lawlessness will not be tolerated, and the full weight of the law will be applied to any offender,” the statement added, while urging motorists to comply strictly with traffic regulations.

Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has ordered the prosecution of the TikToker for multiple traffic violations.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the FRSC said its Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, directed the Lagos State Sector Commander to commence prosecution for his action, use of a mobile phone while driving.

Mohammed expressed concern over what he described as a growing trend of dangerous road use by celebrities and content creators seeking online attention.

“This incident, which could have resulted in loss of lives, serves as a grim reminder that fame does not confer immunity from the law, nor does it excuse dangerous behaviour on public roads,” he said.

The FRSC stressed that public roads are not studios or streaming platforms and warned that it would not hesitate to apply the law to any offender, regardless of social status.

It also called on entertainment bodies and influencer networks to promote responsible behaviour, noting the influence public figures wield over young people.

The crash occurred on Sunday, December 14, while Peller was livestreaming.  The impact triggered the vehicle’s airbags and attracted the intervention of bystanders.

He was hospitalised, although his medical condition has not been officially disclosed. The incident has continued to generate public debate.

Peller bought the 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV on December 6, 2025, a purchase he publicly announced on social media.

Before the crash Peller’s relationship with fellow content creator Jarvis reportedly became strained due to differing relationship goals.
