Afrobeats singers Yemi Alade, Wizkid &, Asake, Burna Boy, Tems, and Chris Brown featuring Davido &, Lojay have been nominated for the “Best African Music Performance” category at the 67th Grammy Awards.
African music has been consistently bringing out African music with a steady stream of afrobeats stars a year after the Recording Academy added the Best African Music Performance category to the Grammy Awards.
Tyla’s hit song Water, a fusion of South African amapiano and Afropop, made its debut with The Best African Music Performance.
Who will be the biggest afrobeat star at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles will be announced later today.
“Tomorrow” — Yemi Alade
For producing Dee Yasso’s song “Tomorrow,” Yemi Alade has received her first solo Grammy nomination. The song, which was released in 2024, combines South African and Nigerian rhythms and lyrics with a strong African identity.
“MMS” — Asake &, Wizkid
With the release of his single “MMS,” which was dub-dubbed, Ahmed Ololade Asake, was popularly known as Asake and won over his fans last year. On his newest third studio album, “Lungu Boy,” the song stands out. For this song, Asake and Afrobeats legend Wizkid collaborated. The song, which competes with other heavyweight singers in the category, has received the award for the best African instrumental performance at the 67th Grammy Awards.
“Sensational” — Chris Brown Featuring Davido &, Lojay
Chris Brown, a US R&, B singer, was nominated for his song “Sensational,” which features Afrobeats elements and guest vocals from Nigerian artists Davido and Lojay, sparks controversy this year.
A non-African may just be the first to take home the category at Los Angeles’ biggest night of music this year. But till then, fingers remain crossed!
“Higher” — Burna Boy
The awards ceremony is not a new experience for Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, also known as Burna Boy. He has received various Grammy Award nominations.
His album “Twice as Tall” won the 2021 Grammy for Best Global Music Album. He also ended a historic 2023 at No. One of the top ten male African artists on Spotify and the top chart for the year-end US Afrobeats Artists Chart.
The ‘ Dangote ‘ crooner has now totalled six consecutive years with Grammy nominations-including his recent single “Higher” which has been nominated for the “Best African Music Performance” at this year’s ceremony.
“Love Me JeJe” — Tems
Temilade Openiyi, a winner of the Grammys, has been recording hit songs with artists like Drake, Rihanna, and Beyoncé since 2020 and winning them all. Tems is the most nominated African act this year, with three nominations available for her: Best African Music Performance, Best Global Music Album, and Best R&, B Song.
