Bumrah to miss England T20 series but Shami back
Mohammed Shami, a fellow fast bowler, returns after more than a year out with an injury, but Jasprit Bumrah will miss India’s upcoming T20 international series against England.
World champions India host England in five T20s from 22 January to 2 February, followed by a three-match one-day international series.
Bumrah, 31, was unable to bowl during the second innings of the hosts’ 3-1 series win to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after suffering back spasms during the fifth and final Test earlier this month in Australia.
Since being defeated by Australia in the 50-over World Cup final in November 2023, Shami has not represented India.
The 34-year-old subsequently had ankle surgery and has dealt with knee issues.
Rishabh Pant, the wicketkeeper, was dropped from the 15-man T20 squad, but he is likely back after playing in all five of Australia’s Test matches. Additionally, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill were not in the Test squad.
India’s options for the England series will be Dhruv Jurel and Sanju Samson, while Suryakumar Yadav, the hosts’ captain, will lead them.
India has not yet named its squad for the ODI series or the following Champions Trophy.
