Vendors in a state of panic as a result of a massive fire that swept through Abuja’s Mpape New Market on Friday caused widespread destruction.
The blaze razed over 40 shops, incinerating goods valued at a staggering more than N60 million.
Vendors were counting their losses and coming to terms with the disaster as the market, once a bustling center of business activity, was torn down to ashes.
According to a trader, who spoke to Persecondnews correspondent, the fire, which started about 5: 25 pm, caught traders off guard, leaving them to watch their livelihoods going up in flames.
Although the cause of the fire is still being investigated, it is clear that this is not a singular incident.
A similar fire outbreak that cost the Karimo market just last week destroyed items worth millions of naira.
The safety and security measures in place in these markets are questioned a lot by persistent fires.
