Boyzone’s Shane Lynch wanted to ‘destroy’ Ronan Keating during huge bust up
When Ronan Keating was at the height of Boyzone’s fame, Seething Shane Lynch claims to have been angry with him because he wanted to “destroy” him.
The 48-year-old singer was a member of the group alongside Keith Duffy, 50, Michael Graham, 52, and the late Stephen Gately, but it was his relationship with Ronan which took the longest to repair. After arguing for a while, the two reconciled and are now back together.
Boyzone, who formed in 1993, are back in focus thanks to a new documentary titled Watch Boyzone: No Matter What on Sky Documentaries. The band will share their thoughts and memories from their time in the charts and beyond in the special, which will air on Sunday, February 2.
They all frequently argued over manager Louis Walsh, but Shane claims that Louis Walsh was the one who had the biggest issue with the other singer. “At its peak was a gruelling time, there was no mercy whatsoever”, he said. “We were tired, we were broken. I spent years yelling at Ro and entering this dark world. Nothing really caused me any trouble, and it eventually came out.
He went on to say: “The rage I had for Ronan, in my mind I was going to destroy him. When I saw his face, I couldn’t help but hug the fella, even though I was fuming. The meeting was clearly a concern for Ronan too and he said: “I was worried about the boys ‘ reaction, I hadn’t seen them for years. There was resentment, bitterness, I was s****ing myself”.
The group’s famous management, according to X Factor judge Louis, 72, appears to have had a fractious relationship with all the other artists the Irish music artist has collaborated with over the years. However, Shane has defended the former manager while also considering his difficulties in dealing with him.
He said: “Louis is an uneasy character, he always has been. Although he has awkward social skills, his one-liners save him. They’re what gave him his career. He said things about us all in the past that made us unhappy, but it’s just him. You can’t get annoyed with him”. Louis has criticised the boys for allowing their “egos” to grow at the same impressive rate as their notoriety during their chart-topping heyday.
“He would say something like that on camera and then you’d go speak to him, to his face, and he’d say, ‘ you know I don’t mean it lads, I’m just getting the front page! ‘ That’s what he was fantastic at. The singer added:” I love the man. I love Louis Walsh. I’d love to sit down and have a beer with him at any point in life because everything’s cool. “
