John Spencer-Barnes, a radio personality for the BBC, has caused a stir among his agitated fans since revealing that he was having surgery for the second time in months.

The 63-year-old shared that due to devoloping symptoms consistent with a stroke, he had been taken into the hospital for an operation. Fans flooded John, the host of BBC Radio 5 Live, with messages of support after learning the troubling news.

Writing on X, he told his followers: “I had nothing better to do today so I decided to check into Burnley General Hospital for an operation, ‘ he wrote on X, formerly Twitter, as he shared a snap from his hospital bed. I’ll see you on the other side”.

Fans wish him well while he recovers, though he hasn’t yet explained what the procedure was. I’m only 15 minutes from Burnley, according to one social media user, who added, “If you want some grapes and a bottle of wine sneaked in.” Hope all goes well”.

Another added: “Thinking of you”, while a third wrote: “Wishing you a speedy recovery x” Meanwhile, a fourth fan joked: “Hope you have a lovely sleep”.

John later updated his well-wishers, letting them know his operation was over and he was in recovery, thanking his medical team. Even though I was sent to Whamageddon in recovery, he continued, “Thank you, Burnley General Hospital, for their amazing care over the last 24 hours.

John gave his fans another health update in July, revealing that he had previously experienced two strokes in 2015 and that he had previously had two. He stated, “I’ve been released from the hospital as a result of some symptoms that have been related to a stroke.” I’m anxious to avoid it again after having two strokes in 2015. There were no immediate concerns, according to the examination, and I was advised to take additional tests this week.

John grew up in Dudley, West Midlands in 1961, before heading to Wolverhampton for university. He started out as a freelancer, working at BRMB in Birmingham, before moving to the Beeb’s WM Heartlands from 1989 to 1991. Before joining Welsh station Radio Maldwyn, John spent time at Chiltern Radio Network.

In 1994 he landed a News Editor role at Rock FM in Preston, Lancashire, where he co-ordinated the EMAP Radio response to the IRA bombing in Manchester. His emergency news service replaced Manchester’s Key 103 and Piccadilly Magic off air.

More recently, he’s worked at a variety of BBC regional stations, before deciding to become a freelancer after lockdown forced him to” rethink “his priorities. He stated to RadioToday in 2021, “The BBC wanted me to stay, but now is the right time.” I’m currently working on renovating our 300-year-old home with my husband Dave, and I’ll start adding more work when that is finished, but I want to return to doing some radio because it’s always been my passion.

“I’ve grown a rather fashionable lockdown beard after working remotely for the past year,” explains one journalist.
