Barcelona hand Real Madrid latest El Clasico hammering in Supercopa final
In a wild Spanish Super Cup Clasico final on Sunday in Saudi Arabia, Barcelona won the first trophy since the Hansi Flick era by beating Real Madrid 5-2.
Before their goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was sent off in the second half, a dominant Barcelona hit five in response to Kylian Mbappe’s lead.
Madrid were anticipating avenging their 4-0 home defeat by Barcelona in the LaLiga Clasico in October, but their archrivals in Jeddah left them bruised and battered.
Lamine Yamal levelled after Mbappe’s opener, and Robert Lewandowski doubled Barcelona’s lead from the penalty spot, with Raphinha scoring twice and Alejandro Balde also on target.
Madrid could not capitalize on their numerical advantage in a humiliating defeat, as Rodrygo Goes did with a free kick.
“It’s really nice, it had been a season since we won a trophy. It’s always special and, on top of that, in a Clasico against Real Madrid”, Barcelona defender Jules Kounde told Movistar.
“We were very patient and composed, confident that we would prevail if we followed the plan.”
” I’m very proud and happy with the team… right after the red card, we got together and said we were going to have to suffer, sit back, but we had a big advantage and this can’t escape us. “
‘ Bad defending ‘ cost Real Madrid the game
Carlo Ancelotti, the coach of Real Madrid, claimed that the team’s poor defense contributed to the severe defeat.
They found their goals fairly easily, according to Vincelotti, who told the Movistar, “because we defended poorly and that cost us the game.”
” We’re sad, like all our fans, it’s disappointing, and we don’t have to hide that… we have to look forwards, there’s nothing else we can do. “
The same lineup that both coaches used to start the semifinals were used by both coaches.
A curling strike from the right by Yamal, which forced Thibaut Courtois into a fine save, gave Madrid an early warning.
After Lucas Vazquez effortlessly evaded the Brazilian, the Belgian goalkeeper also put together a powerful stop to stop a Raphinha header.
Despite Barcelona’s opening salvo, it was Real Madrid who took the lead in the fifth minute with Mbappe’s brilliant goal on the counterattack.
After Vinicius won the ball back, the French forward broke loose on the halfway line and clipped past Szczesny after breaking into the area and repeatedly being frustrated by the offside flag in the Catalans’ league defeat.
Barcelona recover from a goal deficit.
The Spanish winger struck from the right and fired a low finish inside the near post in a manner similar to Lionel Messi’s, who is frequently compared to the former Barca great. It took a stunning individual goal from Yamal, who was 17 years old, to bring the scoreline to one.
After Eduardo Camavinga arrived late and carelessly clattered Gavi, Barcelona continued to push and go ahead through Lewandowski’s penalty.
Raphinha soon added Barcelona’s third with a header from Kounde’s cross from deep, and they grabbed their fourth before half-time on the break.
When Yamal and Raphinha collided, Balde slotted past Courtois, and the latter lost control.
After the break, Barcelona continued in the same vein, with Raphinha scoring the fifth goal with a neat dribble and finish after Marc Casado had played him in.
When Mbappe sped in at the other end, rounding goalkeeper Szczesny, who brought him down outside the area, and after a VAR review was dismissed, the Catalans were reduced to 10 men.
Rodrygo, who earlier hit the post, rifled home the free-kick past Szczesny’s replacement Inaki Pena.
Real Madrid are left with Bellingham and Mbappe,
Jude Bellingham was brilliantly teed up by Mbappe, but a superb Kounde challenge in stoppage time denied him.
On a strong individual display, the French forward also nearly scored once more, but Pena tipped his effort away.
” He was the best]Madrid player], “said Ancelotti, noting an improvement after Mbappe’s hit-and-miss start to life at the club, following his switch from Paris Saint-Germain.
In a contentious matter that overshadowed the semifinals earlier in the week, Barcelona made midfielder Dani Olmo their first appearance since he was temporarily signed to the club.
However, their five-star display offered a host of other talking points as Barca won a record-extending 15th Spanish Super Cup.
