Manchester United claim they can’t “completely eliminate” the possibility of away fans buying tickets in Old Trafford areas designated for home supporters.

More than 3,500 Rangers fans were present at the away end of Thursday’s Europa League game, but television footage showed dozens more celebrating an 88th-minute equalizer in a game they lost 2-1.

United claim that the club enforced a number of “strict” preventative measures to prevent fans from securing tickets in the home end, and that the club maintains that tickets were only distributed to supporters on the club’s database.

But the club acknowledged that, given the “unauthorised touting of tickets”, they could not “completely eliminate” the possibility of away fans sitting in the home end.

United will launch a comprehensive investigation into how Rangers fans received tickets for home games and promise to impose the “strongest possible sanctions” against registered ticket holders who are found to be breaking the law.

Greater Manchester Police reported that they made 39 arrests throughout the night, 26 of which were made as a result of a disturbance in the city center.

After more than 2000 Galatasaray fans were permitted to enter the home section of a Champions League game at Old Trafford, the club apologised to the fans in 2023.
