Venezuela rearrests opposition figure Guanipa after release: Prosecutor

Venezuela’s public prosecutor’s office has said opposition figure Juan Pablo Guanipa has been rearrested shortly after his release.

In a statement on Monday, the office said 61-year-old Guanipa, an ally of Nobel laureate Maria Corina Machado, had not complied with the terms of his release on Sunday, without elaborating.

It said Guanipa, accused of leading a “terrorist” plot, has been put under house arrest “in order to safeguard the criminal process”.

Guanipa, who was vice president of Venezuela’s National Assembly, was first arrested in May 2025 after months in hiding. His release on Sunday made him one of hundreds of political prisoners freed since January 8, when the government, under pressure from the United States, announced a new series of releases.

The release of political prisoners comes weeks after President Nicolas Maduro was abducted by the US forces in a military operation in Caracas and taken to the US. Maduro has since been indicted on drug and gun charges. He has pleaded not guilty.

‘Kidnapped’

Guanipa’s son, Ramon, referred to his father’s seizure on Monday as an “abduction”, saying a group of about 10 unidentified, armed people had taken him. “We demand immediate proof of life and his release,” said Ramon in a message shared on his father’s X page.

Machado also claimed Guanipa had been “kidnapped” and that the incident happened in Caracas’s Los Chorros neighbourhood. In a message of support for her ally on X, Machado demanded Guanipa’s “immediate release”.

Hours earlier, newly freed Guanipa had posted several videos to social media in which he addressed a crowd of journalists and ‌supporters, urging the release of other political prisoners and calling the current administration illegitimate.

Since Maduro’s abduction on January 3, Vice President Delcy Rodriguez has taken over as interim president. She has since moved to cooperate with the US and opened up the country’s enormous oil reserves to international corporations.

Maduro and his predecessor, Hugo Chavez, were critics of US hegemony in Latin America.

Venezuela’s opposition and human rights groups have said for years ‌that the country’s government uses detentions to stamp out dissent.

T20 World Cup, Group C, Kolkata

Scotland 207-4 (20 overs): Munsey 84 (54), McMullen 41* (18)

Italy 134 (16.4 overs): B. Manenti 52 (31); Leask 4-17

Scotland win by 73 runs

Michael Leask and George Munsey starred as Scotland beat World Cup debutants Italy by 73 runs at Eden Gardens.

Munsey – dropped on 40 – blasted 84 as Scotland set 207-4 off their 20 overs, helped by Leask taking 22 from the final five balls of the innings.

Leask carried that momentum into the field, dismissing Italian opener Justin Mosca first ball as Munsey took an excellent diving catch to his right.

Despite a 73-run partnership between brothers Ben and Harry Manenti, Italy were always behind the rate and once they were removed, Scotland skittled the tail for a comfortable win.

With captain Wayne Madsen unable to bat having dislocated his shoulder fielding, Italy were bowled out for 134 in 16.4 overs.

Leask finished with magnificent figures of 4-17, while Mark Watt chipped in with 2-24 as Munsey pouched four catches.

With a rushed build-up to the tournament having replaced Bangladesh, Scotland gave themselves a chance chasing 183 against West Indies in their opener before ultimately falling 35 short.

They built on that showing with an excellent batting display aided by a flat pitch and a rapid outfield.

Two thick edges brought Munsey boundaries in the opening over and that set the tone as the left-handed opener struck 13 fours and two sixes in a powerful knock.

Dropped by Anthony Mosca off the final ball of the powerplay, he and Michael Jones (37) added 126 for the opening wicket, laying the platform for Scotland’s middle order.

Brandon McMullen was unperturbed by the loss of both openers, striking stylish six after stylish six to up the run-rate further.

He finished 41 not out off just 18 balls and had the best seat in the house to watch Leask close out the innings by smacking Thomas Draca for two sixes and two fours.

Spinners go to work against depleted Italy

Although Leask and Munsey combined with the first ball of the reply, former South Africa international JJ Smuts and Anthony Mosca took 23 off Brad Wheal to spark life into the debutants.

However, both men were out within the powerplay as Brad Currie and Watt struck for the Scots.

The Australia-born Manenti brothers kept Italy in the contest, but Harry picked out Munsey at long-off from the returning Leask and Ben holed out to Jones off Olly Davidson as hope drained away.

Grant Stewart and Gian-Piero Meade both chipped straightforward catches back down the ground, before Wheal came back to dismiss Ali Hasan and wrap up proceedings.

From 1% chance of survival to Super Bowl winner

Ben Collins

BBC Sport journalist at Levi’s Stadium
  • Comments

Derick Hall doesn’t just feel blessed to be a Super Bowl champion. He feels blessed to be alive after being born with a 1% chance of survival.

The Seattle linebacker played a key role as the Seahawks beat the New England Patriots 29-13 in Sunday’s NFL title decider, claiming two sacks in a dominant defensive display.

But it is a wonder the 24-year-old is even here at all after being born four months premature in 2001.

Hall weighed less than 3lb and was on life support when his mother refused to have it discontinued.

Now 6ft 3in and 254lb, he hugged his mother on the field in Santa Clara, California, after Seattle’s second Super Bowl win.

“Everyone knows my story, what it took for me to get here, what it took for me just to be alive and have the chance,” said Hall.

“I’m very blessed – kudos to Mom. That was a special moment after the game. I feel like she’s an unsung hero, an unsung warrior through this whole process. She always fought for me. She never gave up.

“Just being able to play football and what this game has done for me and my life and my family…

Seahawks standing on ‘hallowed ground’

After a difficult start to his NFL career, it seemed Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold was destined to become a journeyman back-up.

But after leading the Minnesota Vikings to last season’s play-offs, the Seahawks became his fifth team in eight years – and third in three – and they have won American sport’s biggest prize in his first season in Seattle.

“My team-mates and my coaches, they believed in me since the first training camp, every single day we came to work,” said 28-year-old Darnold.

“I shared a great moment with my parents and fiancee Katie after the game and I think that’s what kind of got me a little bit. I told my dad and my mom, I’m here because of their belief in me.

“Some people called me crazy throughout my career for believing in myself so much, but it was because of my parents. It allowed me to go out there and play free and have a ton of confidence.

“On offence, I feel like we didn’t play as good as we could have. I certainly didn’t, but our defence and special teams had our back.”

Seattle also signed Cooper Kupp in the off-season and he claimed his second Super Bowl win, having been the Most Valuable Player (MVP) when the Los Angeles Rams became NFL champions in 2022.

“My wife was the first person to believe in me,” said the wide receiver. “She’s believed that this story was written so long ago.

“I would like to say I was all in and believed it as well, but there were some tough times. Anna has believed that this is what we came to Seattle to do.

“It’s an unbelievable story. To be in this place, it’s hallowed ground.”

Seattle defensive coordinator Aden Durde became the first overseas coach to win a Super Bowl, after beginning his coaching journey in the British amateur game.

The 46-year-old said he felt the Seahawks were going to win “from down one”, adding: “We put a plan together and the guys executed at an elite level.

“I’m very grateful. A lot of people sacrificed a lot for me to be sitting here, but you don’t see that.

Security Operatives Discover Shallow Graves With Mutilated Bodies In Ebonyi

Following the attack on Okporojo in Oso-Edda, Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, a joint security team comprising the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Police, Department of State Security, and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps has discovered shallow graves containing mutilated bodies in Amasiri, Afikpo Local Government Area.

The troops were deployed in direct response to the gruesome killings and beheadings of four individuals in Okporojo village.

In a statement, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan-Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 82 Division Nigerian Army, said the atrocities demanded urgent intervention to restore peace, protect innocent lives, and bring the perpetrators to justice.

He added that the Ebonyi State Government, in line with its constitutional responsibility to safeguard lives and property, imposed a curfew and temporarily closed schools in Amasiri to prevent escalation and ensure public safety.

According to Olalekan-Ayeni, the security agencies have been deployed to enforce the curfew, conduct uninterrupted investigations and security operations, protect medical teams, and manage the humanitarian implications of the crisis.

He said the joint teams have been carrying out intelligence-driven patrols, cordon-and-search operations, and forensic exhumations in the affected areas.

“Credible intelligence has revealed multiple burial sites containing both adults and children, highlighting the scale of the crimes and the need for a robust security presence to dismantle criminal networks and prevent further violence,” he added.

The Army stressed that the deployment of troops is not targeted at the people of Amasiri but at criminal elements exploiting communal tensions to commit heinous acts.

It noted that the operation is intelligence-led, professional, and conducted in partnership with local leadership to ensure transparency and accountability.

The Nigerian Army also assured that it remains committed, alongside sister agencies, to protecting all citizens without bias. It stated that the intervention will continue until peace is fully restored, perpetrators are apprehended, and justice is served.

The Army urged the public to disregard misinformation and support ongoing efforts to secure Afikpo and neighboring communities.

Serrano criticises Paul for ‘fake American’ comment

Bobbie Jackson

BBC Sport journalist

Seven-weight world champion Amanda Serrano has said Jake Paul was wrong to call Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny a “fake American” following his performance during the Super Bowl half-time show.

Puerto Rican Serrano was the first boxer to be signed by Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions in 2021 and was handed a “lifetime” contract by the company in 2025.

Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, performed a 14-minute set at Levi’s Stadium in California as the Seattle Seahawks beat the New England Patriots.

Paul said in a post on X that he turned off the half-time show because he could not support Bad Bunny and suggested that the six-time Grammy Award winner “publicly hates America”.

WBA and WBO featherweight champion Serrano responded with her own lengthy statement, saying she was “celebrating with awe” at how Bad Bunny represented her culture before addressing Paul directly.

“I am proud to be Puerto Rican, and I am proud to be an American citizen,” Serrano wrote.

“Puerto Ricans are not “fake Americans”. We are citizens who have contributed to this country in every field, from military service to sports, business, science, and the arts, and our identity and citizenship deserve respect.

“I would not have the opportunities I have without the support and belief that Most Valuable Promotions and Jake Paul showed in me, and I will always be grateful for the role they have played in helping change my life and in elevating women’s boxing.

“At the same time, I want to be clear: I do not agree with statements that question the legitimacy or identity of Puerto Rican people, and I cannot support that characterisation. It is wrong.”

Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States. Puerto Ricans cannot vote in the election to decide the president but they do have American citizenship.

Paul later said his use of the word fake had been “misinterpreted”.

“He’s not a fake citizen obviously bc [because] he’s Puerto Rican and I love Puerto Rico and all Americans who support the country,” Paul posted on X.

Paul made his professional boxing debut in 2020 and has won 12 of his 14 fights but lost his most high-profile bout to Anthony Joshua in December.

His brother Logan said he did not agree with his sibling’s comments and that “Puerto Ricans are Americans”.

Claressa Shields, a five-weight world champion, urged Paul to “do better”.

“Puerto Ricans are not fake citizens,” Shields posted on X.

“You would think that you of all people would support this as you have so many Puerto Rican women under your umbrella.

“What’s happening with ICE is terrible and we shouldn’t want to see harm done to anyone who is a part of America & a minority! Do better Jake. This isn’t right.”

According to streaming service Spotify, Bad Bunny was the world’s most-played artist in 2025 and made history by becoming the first musician to perform a Super Bowl half-time show entirely in Spanish.

The 31-year-old made two statements in English, one with a billboard message reading “The only thing more powerful than hate is love” and the other “Together, We Are America” written on a football that he held.

The farce of the ‘ceasefire’ coverage in Gaza

More than 500 Palestinians have been killed since a US-brokered “ceasefire” was signed, which begs the question: Should journalists, in contextualising the story, really be calling this a “ceasefire”? As Israel signals it’s preparing to resume full-scale war, we examine how media silence, selective framing and restricted access help keep Gaza off the world’s screens.
