National Stability Strengthened When Growth Reaches The Poorest — Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has said that Nigeria’s diversity remains its greatest strength, stressing that economic growth must reach even the poorest households to ensure national stability and sustainable development.

The President spoke on Monday at the National Economic Council (NEC) Conference on Inclusive Growth and Sustainable National Development, held at the State House, Abuja.

“Nigeria’s diversity is our strength. When states grow, Nigeria grows. When growth reaches the poorest household, national stability is strengthened. When development is sustainable, our children inherit growth,” Tinubu said.

Describing the task before the nation as demanding but historic, the President said his Renewed Hope Agenda represents a national compact and a promise that the sacrifices of Nigerians would yield a stronger, fairer and more prosperous country.

“The task before us is demanding, but the opportunity is historic. The Renewed Hope Agenda is a national compact, a promise that the sacrifices of Nigerians will lead to a stronger, fairer and more prosperous nation,” he said.

‘Inclusive Growth, Monetary Policy’

Tinubu expressed confidence that the resolutions of the conference would support daily farming, livestock investment, ranch development and diversification of agricultural produce, noting that agricultural modernisation remains central to inclusive growth.

“I promise you here that I will play my part. There are seven zones, and state-of-the-art mechanisation is coming,” the President added.

He said his administration had undertaken bold but necessary reforms since assuming office to stabilise the economy, restore confidence and lay the foundation for long-term growth.

“Since the inception of this administration, we have undertaken bold and necessary reforms to stabilise the economy, restore confidence and lay the foundation for long-term growth.

“These reforms are instruments for delivering prosperity, dignity and opportunity for all Nigerians,” Tinubu said.

The President added that monetary policy reforms introduced by his administration had begun yielding positive results and were receiving international recognition.

“I must say again that the monetary policy we embarked upon has yielded positive results and is being recognised around the world,” he noted.

Tinubu said the Federal Government had recorded notable achievements reflecting its commitment to cooperative federalism and inclusive development, particularly in improving revenue distribution to sub-national governments.

“With this, state and local governments now receive increased and more predictable allocations, improving their capacity to pay salaries, invest in infrastructure and deliver social services,” he said.

The President said his administration had “prioritised infrastructure development across transportation, power, digital connectivity and irrigation as catalysts for inclusive growth, while expanding social investment and human capital programmes targeting vulnerable households, youths, women and small businesses.”

Muslim countries slam Israel for ‘illegal annexation’ push in West Bank

Eight Muslim-majority countries have denounced Israel for trying to impose “unlawful Israeli sovereignty” in the occupied West Bank, after it approved controversial new measures expanding its control and making it easier for Israeli settlers to buy land.

Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and the United Arab Emirates condemned Israel’s move “in the strongest terms” on Monday, according to a Saudi Foreign Ministry statement.

Israel’s new measures, greenlighted Sunday by its security cabinet, have major implications on property rights and Israeli security procedures in the occupied Palestinian territory.

The Times of Israel, citing a joint statement by Israel’s far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Defence Minister Israel Katz, said the new rules would allow Jewish Israelis to buy private real estate in the territory and open up previously confidential land registries to the public.

The measures will also allow Israeli authorities to take charge of managing some religious sites and increase Israeli supervision and enforcement in areas run by the Palestinian Authority (PA), according to Israeli media reports.

Smotrich said the move was aimed at “deepening our roots in all regions of the Land of Israel and burying the idea of a Palestinian state”.

‘Dangerous annexation push’

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said the decision amounted to de facto annexation, and called on US President Donald Trump and the United Nations Security Council to intervene.

Al Jazeera’s Nida Ibrahim, reporting from the town of Birzeit in the West Bank, said Palestinians view the development “as the most dangerous push towards annexation and the most critical decision since Israel occupied the West Bank in 1967”.

She noted that under the new rules, there was nothing that would prevent Israeli settlers from owning land and “coming to Palestinian city centres”.

In the joint statement, the eight Muslim-majority countries said Israel is trying to put in place “a new legal and administrative reality” that accelerates its “illegal annexation and the displacement of the Palestinian people”.

The countries affirmed Palestinians’ right to “self-determination and statehood” and urged the international community to “compel Israel to halt its dangerous escalation”.

The European Union also condemned the Israeli move, calling it “another step in the wrong direction”.

The West Bank is among the areas that Palestinians seek for a future independent state, along with the Gaza Strip and occupied East Jerusalem. Currently, much of the West Bank is under direct Israeli military control, with extremely limited Palestinian self-rule in some areas, governed by the Western-backed PA.

More than 700,000 Israelis live in settlements and outposts in the occupied West Bank, which are illegal under international law, while some 3.3 million Palestinians live in the territory.

Israeli forces regularly carry out violent raids, conduct arrests, and impose restrictions in the occupied West Bank, where attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians have also intensified, often under the protection of Israeli soldiers.

Muir misses out on Olympic medal by 0.41 points

Freestyle skier Kirsty Muir missed out on Great Britain’s first medal of the 2026 Winter Olympics by the narrowest of margins with a fourth-place finish in the women’s slopestyle.

Muir scored 76.05 points with a brilliant third run, finishing only 0.41 behind Canadian bronze medallist Megan Oldham at Livigno Snow Park.

Having fallen on the penultimate jump of her opening run, Muir sat in sixth after her second.

The 21-year-old brought out her best when it mattered, but it was not quite enough.

“I put it out there on every run,” an emotional Muir told BBC Sport.

In a final that demonstrated the strength of women’s freestyle skiing, Mathilde Gremaud successfully defended her Olympic title by only 0.38 points.

China’s Eileen Gu – arguably a bigger star off the slopes – took silver, but crashed on her final run to allow Gremaud a victory lap, a Switzerland flag tied around her neck, billowing in the wind as she soaked up her moment on the course.

Muir is one of Team GB’s best medal hopes at the Milan-Cortina Games, and has another shot at the podium when she competes in the big air starting on Saturday.

Four years ago in Beijing, Scotland’s Muir was GB’s youngest competitor at 17, but she finished fifth in the big air and eighth in the slopestyle.

After Beijing Muir achieved three World Cup podiums, but in December 2023 an MRI scan showed she had been competing with a fully torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

An operation followed in early 2024, as well as surgery on a shoulder problem that had troubled her for some time.

Eleven months later she was back on snow, and her maiden World Cup gold arrived in Tignes in March 2025.

Two more have followed this season, as well as slopestyle gold and big air silver at the invitation-only X Games on the eve of the Olympics.

“I’m going to look forward to big air, but I just need to take this one in,” Muir said.

‘Big crisis’: Kast’s immigration agenda brings uncertainty to Chile’s north

Fears of growing crime

For immigrants fleeing violence and crises in other parts of South America, Chile symbolises relative prosperity.

The country is considered among the safest in Latin America, and its gross domestic product (GDP) is among the region’s top five.

But during his presidential campaign, Kast harnessed fears of growing instability in Chile, which has seen spikes in violent crime in recent years.

Kidnappings, while rare, rose by 135 percent between 2015 and 2025, according to a security report from OSAC, a partnership led by the State Department in the United States.

And homicides reached a peak in 2022 following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, with 1,330 victims reported out of a population of nearly 20 million. That number has since declined.

Still, Kast and his supporters credited the upswing to a parallel increase in irregular migration.

“Thousands of foreigners enter illegally without control or identification. Many of them bring violence, weapons and criminal networks,” Kast wrote as part of his campaign platform.

An estimated 336,984 foreigners live in Chile without legal paperwork, according to the country’s government. The majority, some 252,591, come from Venezuela, which has experienced economic collapse and political repression in recent years.

The influx has coincided with the expansion of transnational criminal networks like Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua, which has gained a foothold in Arica y Parinacota.

Truck Driver Arrested As Cyclist Dies Under LASUTH Bridge In Ikeja

A truck driver has been apprehended following a fatal accident that claimed the life of a cyclist beneath the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Bridge in Ikeja.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday by its Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, signed by Adebayo Taofiq.

According to LASTMA, the accident occurred at the traffic signal corridor inward Airport Road, Ikeja, and involved a DAF articulated truck and a cyclist.

Preliminary findings revealed that both the cyclist and the truck, which was advancing from the Maryland axis, attempted to negotiate the roundabout beneath the bridge at the same time.

In the process, the cyclist reportedly failed to maintain a safe distance from the truck, resulting in a collision.

“The situation escalated disastrously, resulting in the cyclist being violently crushed and succumbing to fatal injuries on the spot,” the statement said.

LASTMA operatives who were on duty at the location reportedly responded promptly to the incident and intercepted the truck driver, who allegedly attempted to flee the scene.

“Their prompt and decisive action culminated in the immediate apprehension of the truck driver, who had attempted to abscond from the scene to evade culpability,” LASTMA stated, adding that the suspect was handed over to officers of the Ikeja Police Division for investigation and prosecution.

To prevent further accidents and ease traffic flow, officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) were invited to evacuate the remains of the deceased from the road.

Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and extended condolences to the victim’s family.

“He offered prayers that Almighty God grants the family the fortitude, resilience and divine comfort required to endure the profound grief occasioned by the tragedy,” the statement noted.

Giwa also used the opportunity to caution cyclists and commercial motorbike riders to prioritise safety while using the state’s roads, warning against riding on expressways and major arterial routes.

According to him, “The Lagos State Government has over time, sustained intensive sensitisation initiatives through public jingles and documentary campaigns aimed at enlightening cyclists and other vulnerable road users on the necessity of confining their movements to inner roads, away from highways and high-risk corridors. This safety directive equally applies to skateboard users and other non-motorised conveyances.”
