Owo Massacre: Amotekun Officer Identifies 2nd Defendant As Gunman

An officer of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, Amotekun, has told a Federal High Court Abuja, that he engaged in a gun battle with one of the attackers behind the June 5, 2022 massacre at St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, and later identified the man in court as the second defendant.

The witness, code-named SSG, an Assistant Commander with Amotekun and a resident of Owo, said he and his team encountered the fleeing attackers in the bush shortly after the church shooting, following intelligence from eyewitnesses.

According to SSG, he was initially responding to a separate kidnapping incident at Shagari Village in Owo when he received a call from his commander to abort the mission because an attack had just occurred at St. Francis Catholic Church.

Continuing his testimony, he said he saw spent AK-47 shells scattered on the ground, and inside the building, he met lifeless bodies of men, women and children, as well as several injured worshippers, when he got to the church.

He said the injured were taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, while the corpses were deposited at St. Louis Hospital.

SSG told the court that he later gathered intelligence from a corn seller and a motorcycle rider, who said the assailants escaped in a blue Nissan vehicle towards the Achievers University axis along Ute Road.

He said his team chased the attackers and found the vehicle abandoned along the road at Ijebu area.

He noted that the vehicle was blue, with registration number AKR 895 AG. He added that they found sachet water inside the car.

The vehicle was taken to the Amotekun office in Owo, after which the team tracked the suspects’ footprints into the bush.

At a cocoa farm area, SSG said the trail became unclear, and while observing the surroundings, he noticed movement in a nearby bush.

“I saw the mouth of an AK-47 rifle pointed at me,” he said.

He explained that as he tried to respond with his pump-action gun, he realised it was on safety mode. After disengaging the safety, a gun battle ensued.

During the exchange, the witness said the other attackers escaped into the bush, while one hid behind a tree and shot the hunter accompanying the team, killing him on the spot.

He added that he was focused on evacuating the dead hunter to the mortuary at FMC, Owo.

SSG was asked in court to identify the person he saw during the shootout. He pointed at the second defendant and reaffirmed his identification during cross-examination.

He said the suspect was later arrested through the joint efforts of the police, civil defence, the DSS and other security agencies.

The witness also identified photographs of the recovered vehicle and told the court that the car is still in the custody of security agencies.

Earlier, a pathologist, code-named SSF, testified that he conducted post-mortem examinations on victims of the Owo church attack in June 2022.

He said he was invited by the Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Awo Ajaka, and carried out the autopsies in Owo.

SSF told the court that all the bodies examined showed multiple gunshot injuries from firearms fired from different directions, leading to massive internal bleeding and death.

He identified several victims by name and body numbers in the forensic report tendered in evidence, and said the original copy was submitted to the Ondo State Government.

During cross-examination, he said he could not determine the exact type of gun or bullets used, explaining that he is a pathologist and not a ballistic expert.

The court upheld the prosecution’s objection, and the witness was discharged.

‘Controlled chaos’ as Boro overhaul Coventry at top

Adam Lanigan

BBC Sport, North East & Cumbria

It was on the night of 25 November that Kim Hellberg was introduced to his new set of supporters before sitting down to watch Middlesbrough lose 4-2 in a top-of-the-table clash with Coventry City.

Victory for the Sky Blues opened up a 10-point gap between the sides and also a blueprint in how to succeed in Championship football.

But Hellberg must be a fast learner because 76 days later, three points at Sheffield United has allowed Boro to leapfrog Frank Lampard’s team and become the new Championship leaders.

After slipping to 10th last season in the last days of Michael Carrick’s time in charge, this term was a case of a leap into the unknown after the appointment of Rob Edwards.

But a 100% start in August put them at the top and they rode that wave through the opening couple of months until Edwards was tempted away by a Premier League switch to Wolves.

His departure was not well received by fans who felt that Edwards had jumped ship as soon as another club had glanced eyes at him. Now three months on, with Wolves’ relegation waiting to be rubber-stamped, there is a strong chance his old club will be replacing his new one in the top flight.

Hellberg arrived with a strong reputation from leading unfashionable Hammarby to successive runners-up spots in Sweden’s Allsvenskan.

Would he be able to maintain Boro’s strong start under Edwards in his first coaching job outside his home country?

From 14 games with Hellberg running the show, Boro have amassed 31 points, an average of 2.21 per game. If they manage that over their final 15 games, a final total of 94 points would surely be good enough for an automatic promotion spot.

In this period of almost three months, Boro have collected the most points in the division, the most wins (10) and have conceded the fewest goals (12) while only Sheffield United have scored more than their 27.

Hellberg’s reign began with four wins before a festive wobble where they collected a solitary point from four games with a New Year’s Day defeat at Derby County leaving them nine points adrift of Coventry.

Since then, Boro have been supercharged. Six wins from six. Championship perfection and wins in all different scenarios.

Can they sweep a team aside when on top? Yes, as shown by 4-0 victories over Southampton and Preston North End. Can they grind it out? Yes, as shown against an in-form Norwich City.

While it is on the road that Hellberg has really been impressed by what his team has shown.

‘Players have showed a lot of qualities’

“Away against Stoke, that had only conceded five goals in eight games, they scored the first goal but we turned it around,” Hellberg told BBC Sport.

“At West Bromwich with a new manager, we go 2-0 up, they get it back to 2-2, but we score a late winner and then this game (at Sheffield United) where I thought we had very good control.

“We had a couple of blowouts at home but then the Norwich game, they were in very good form.

“We have played a lot of good teams with different challenges and the players have responded in a brilliant way. They have showed a lot of different qualities to bring those wins together.

In the aftermath of the latest win at Bramall Lane, Hellberg said that the target was not promotion but continued improvement as the prizes are not decided in February.

But regular Boro watchers will know that the first 45 minutes against the Blades was the best football of the season with two goals scored, eight shots on target and a high possession count.

Australia midfielder Riley McGree was one of the goalscorers and he has enjoyed a welcome return from the injury that kept him on the sidelines in the autumn.

He sums up the team’s fast-passing style that is reaping such rewards.

“At times it is controlled chaos, but there is definitely a method to it,” McGree told BBC Radio Tees.

“We train for these moments, we train for the output that we’re going to have in games and I think it paid credit to that.”

While it’s clear that Hellberg’s humility and work ethic is rubbing off on the squad despite them now hitting the league’s summit.

He added: “We’re in form, aren’t we? We’re six from six, but you need to respect everyone in the Championship, whoever you come up against.

As Coventry have already showed this season, pressure can do funny things at the top, but Middlesbrough have the bit between their teeth and now they have to maintain the pace in their new role as the hunted.

T20 World Cup: India vs Pakistan match confirmation delights teams, fans

Pakistan’s decision to reverse its boycott of the match against India at the T20 World Cup has been welcomed by fans, players and coaches in both countries.

The highly anticipated confrontation between the archrivals was thrown into doubt for more than a week after Pakistan’s government ordered its team against taking the field for Sunday’s clash in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The reversal late on Monday brought relief to millions of fans on both sides of the countries’ shared border as well as tournament organisers and coaches.

The Indian camp said it would be “delighted” to play against a “quality side”.

“It’s great that the game is back on. We kind of never changed the preparation,” India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said on Tuesday.

India will play their second Group A match against Namibia on Thursday in New Delhi before flying to Colombo the following morning.

It means a quick turnaround for Sunday’s match, the biggest and most lucrative clash in world cricket.

“It’s going to be a challenge going to Colombo, where Pakistan have been for the last two weeks,” ten Doeschate added.

“We are fully focused on just bringing our best game to that fixture.”

‘Good for cricket’

Pakistan’s decision to go ahead with the game was hailed as an outbreak of “good sense” and “good for cricket”.

A frantic weekend of negotiations saw the International Cricket Council (ICC) and Bangladesh Cricket Board chiefs fly to Lahore on Sunday for talks with the Pakistan Cricket Board.

The governments of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka both wrote to the Islamabad government on Monday, urging it to change its stance and allow the game to go ahead.

After “multilateral discussions, as well as the request of friendly countries, the Government of Pakistan hereby directs the Pakistan National Cricket Team to take the field on February 15”, the Islamabad government said on its official X account late on Monday.

The decision had been taken with the aim of “protecting the spirit of cricket”, it added.

Former India cricketer Madan Lal told the AFP news agency that the resumption was “good for cricket”.

“We want strong teams to play so that the charm of the World Cup is not lost,” he added.

Sri Lanka, who will host the match – which generates multimillions of dollars in advertising, broadcast rights, sponsorships and tourism – also praised the decision.

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in a social media post thanked Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for “ensuring the game we all love goes on”.

Veteran Indian journalist Pradeep Magazine said, “Good sense has prevailed on all sides.”

Financial considerations would have been taken into account, he added.

“Everyone realised that losing the revenue from an India-Pakistan match would have been a loss-loss situation for all ICC member nations.”

‘No greater happiness’

For fans, it’s another chance to watch the bitter rivals face off at a global tournament.

Kafeel Ahmed, a cricket fan from Karachi, said Pakistan vs India matches were unique.

“There is a different intensity to it. If Pakistan wins by 12 runs, there is no greater happiness than that,” Ahmed told the Reuters news agency. “This happiness is not just about a challenge against a rival; it is the feeling that comes after defeating your opponent.”

India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral series since 2012-2013 due to their longstanding political rift.

“The benefit is not only that the public is happy or that young people who play cricket are happy; it also increases business and public interest,” cricket ‌fan Rai Fayaz said.

Rajeev Shukla, vice president of the Board of ‌Control for Cricket in India, said on Tuesday that it was good that a solution had been found.

Grand National ‘the dream’ for role model Aswat

Aamilah Aswat says racing in the Grand National is her ultimate target as she seeks to make more history in the sport.

Last week the 20-year-old became the first black female British jump jockey to win a UK horse race.

That victory came less than three months after Aswat had become the first black female British jump jockey to compete in a race in Britain.

Aswat was part of the inaugural Riding A Dream Academy scholarship programme in 2021-22 and then completed a foundation course at the British Racing School.

And she is clear that her ambition is to ride in the Grand National.

Aswat began riding aged five at St James City Farm – an inner-city stables in Gloucester – before linking up with trainers Kim Bailey and Mat Nicholls.

She was hooked by the sport after racing a pony at Cheltenham.

Her win earlier this month came in just her fourth professional ride after taking out her jockey’s license in autumn 2025.

“All the racing community have been very supportive and nothing has held me back,” Aswat said.

“Every time I would go to Cheltenham I wouldn’t see people the same colour as me, so in that sense it was daunting.”

Bailey could see Aswat’s “natural talent” straight away.

“I take photographs of horses schooling the whole time for my owners and I’ve never had a photograph of her being out of place – that’s quite a unique thing,” Bailey told BBC Sport.

“It’s very, very hard for [conditional jockeys] to get going – 90% of the jockeys now are either sons of trainers or sons of owners who put a lot of money into the business.

“I ring up an owner and say ‘I’ve got this really good young black girl who wants to ride. Will you let them ride your horse?’ Well, I mean, frankly, you’re paying the same for her as you would do for [reigning champion jockey] Sean Bowen or anybody else. It’s quite a difficult one.

“She’s got to be strong enough to take all that and I’m pretty confident she will be able to cope with the additional attention, including potential social media abuse.

‘Hopefully it inspires others’

As a youngster, Aswat looked up to Khadijah Mellah – the first British Muslim woman to win a horse race in Britain.

Mellah, then aged 18, made history by winning the Markel Magnolia Cup in 2019, months after riding a horse for the first time.

“It made me believe in myself even more,” Aswat said.

Mateta knee injury ‘not as bad as feared’

Paul Battison

BBC Sport Journalist

The knee injury which scuppered Jean-Philippe Mateta’s move to AC Milan last month is “not as bad as feared” and he will not need surgery, says Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner.

France striker Mateta was on the verge of joining Milan for £30m on deadline day, but the deal was called off after knee issues emerged over the course of two medical examinations.

The 28-year-old has been carrying the injury during the first half of the season but Glasner says “several specialists and doctors” have played down its severity.

The news boosts Mateta’s hopes of playing for France at the World Cup, which begins in June.

Glasner could not confirm when Mateta will return to training, but added he would be “100% committed” to the Eagles and warmly welcomed back when fit again.

“I’m 100% convinced that JP will give his best when he wears the Eagles shirt again, and I think then he deserves the best support,” said Glasner

“I’m pretty sure our fans will support him in the best way, appreciating what he has done for Crystal Palace.

“As long as a player is here, as long as a manager is here, as long as a staff member is here, then everybody can expect being 100% committed to Crystal Palace, and that is what JP will show.”

Mateta has scored 56 goals in 186 appearances for Palace, including eight in the Premier League this season, but will face competition from club-record signing Jorgen Strand Larsen when he returns to the fold.

Larsen joined Palace from Wolves for a deal worth up to £48m on deadline day.

O’Neill hopes for full Celtic allocation at Ibrox

Interim manager Martin O’Neill hopes Celtic will be granted the full ticket allocation available to them for next month’s Scottish Cup quarter-final against Rangers at Ibrox.

Teams in the Scottish Cup have the right to claim up to 20% of tickets, which at Ibrox is more than 10,000.

However rules also state that both clubs and the police have to agree to a designated away end.

Traditionally, around 7,500 Celtic fans filled the Broomloan Stand for Old Firm derbies at Ibrox, but their allocation was reduced to fewer than 1,000 by Rangers in 2018.

Since then, away allocations at both Ibrox and Celtic Park have fluctuated between about 750 and zero in a series of tit-for-tat moves.

O’Neill says it would be “fantastic” to see a large Celtic contingent return to Govan.

“I don’t know the club stance, but if you take me out of the club at this minute, just being a Celtic supporter, I would want all the tickets we can get – the allocation that’s available to us under the rules.

“I assume that would be forthcoming. I thought that the Old Firm fixture lost a little bit in the sense that the full allocation was not given, for whatever reason.

“I don’t know historically what it was. I’ve got kind of an idea, but it doesn’t really matter.

“That did lose a little bit of one of the great fixtures in European football, if not the world.

“But at least there’s some fans coming back and it makes a bit of a difference.

“To get the full allocation as we did, going to Ibrox and having the side to the left full of Celtic fans, was always gratifying.”

Meanwhile, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could make his debut against Livingston on Wednesday and key defender Kieran Tierney could be fit despite a suspected broken nose.

“He’s looking pretty good,” O’Neill said about former Liverpool and Arsenal midfielder Oxlade-Chamberlain, who signed as a free agent last week.

“I haven’t picked the squad yet, but there’s a possibility of that.
