Referee Stuart Attwell made history when the video assistant referee (VAR) made a decision inside the stadium during Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final between Tottenham and Liverpool.

Attwell explained why Dominic Solanke’s late goal for Spurs was ruled out as the first time it occurred in England.

“After a review, Dominic Solanke was in an offside position”, he said over the PA system.

Spurs did, however, break the first-leg tie 1-0 thanks to Lucas Bergvall in the 86th minute.

Tottenham’s manager Ange Postecoglou expressed regret for making the announcement, telling Sky Sports: “If anyone thinks that announcement added anything to the game tonight, I am sorry.

” It used to be you put your flag up and the game goes on, but anyway. “

The League Cup semi-finals will be tested out for all time as a result of the decision to make the announcements.

Referees will make final decisions after a visit to the VAR pitchside monitor, or when decisions are made regarding facts like intentional handball by a goalscorer and offside offenses involving a ball-touching incident.

The system was also tested during the 2023 Women’s World Cup, and these announcements are common in other sports like rugby union and American football.
