According to officials, a bus plunged down a ravine outside of Guatemala City, killing at least 30 people and injuring many others.
Mynor Ruano, a spokesman for the city’s fire service, told reporters on Monday that efforts were under way “to save other people who are trapped” in the wreckage.
The bus slammed from Puente Belice, a highway bridge that crosses over a road and creek, on Monday as it traveled on a busy in and out of Guatemala’s capital.
Rescue personnel were seen removing victims from the ravine in footage that the fire department posted on social media. The bus was shown in reverse on images.
Guatemala’s president, Bernardo Arevalo, set out three days of national mourning and set up the army and disaster agency to support the response efforts.
He expressed his condolences to the victims’ families who received heartbreaking news today. “Their pain is my pain”.
Ricardo Quinonez, the mayor of Guatemala City, claimed on social media that traffic police were assisting with the emergency services’ deployment while they worked to find alternative routes in the area.
