Despite losing the FA Cup to 10-man Manchester United on penalties on Sunday, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said he couldn’t be prouder of his players.

After Diogo Dalot was booked twice in the opening half, the Gunners had a man advantage for more than an hour.

United were in front when Bruno Fernandes fired the ball, but Arsenal equalized through Gabriel Magalhaes just after Dalot left.

However, Arteta’s men were given a run-in with the game as another chance to win a five-year trophy was lost.

Altay Bayindir saved a penalty before Kai Havertz and Declan Rice had countless chances to make it a goalless draw in 90 minutes.

With the exception of United’s reserve goalkeeper Bayindir, who had 30 minutes to score before the game’s final goal, Havertz was the only player to miss the game.

“It was unbelievable”, said Arteta. We deserved to win the game by a mile, but the reality is that we are out and that is the only thing that will matter.

In each of the previous two Premier League seasons, Arsenal finished second behind Manchester City.

However, they have so far failed to live up to the hype that this campaign needs to advance.

In the Premier League title race, Arsenal are six points clear of Liverpool, who also have a game in hand, and were defeated by Newcastle to lose 2-0 in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final at home.

Arteta, though, launched a passionate defence of his squad with one eye on Wednesday’s north London derby against Tottenham.

“I love my players, I love our team and I love how good they are”, added the Spaniard.

“In 1, 000 games (like this) you lose one and it was this one. However, it is a part of our industry, our game, and we leave because we have no time, and we have a big one on Wednesday.

After his side came from behind to draw 2-2 at Liverpool last weekend, Victory was yet another sign of progress for United boss Ruben Amorim.

Before losing their opponent to ten men, the Red Devils had to defend for protracted periods of time.

No matter what the circumstances are, Amorim said, “We have to compete regardless,” Amorim said.

“We had more chances, but I believe we deserved to win in the way that we played and fought.”

As Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy makes his return to Old Trafford, United will get paid for reaching round four with a familiar face.

Prior to Amorim’s arrival in November, the Dutchman was in charge of four matches as caretaker boss.

Van Nistelrooy is no longer a member of Amorim’s coaching staff, but he said he is eager to speak with former United striker again.

I’m eager to speak with him, he said. He’s a class guy”, added Amorim.

“But we need to win! He might be divided because he enjoys this club.
