Arrested Vandals Will Face Law, Wike Vows

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has pledged to deter other people who are detained by security forces for allegedly helping to remove manhole covers for sewage from roads in Abuja.

The Minister also stated that the government would follow through with all purchases and uses of the vandalized manhole covers, as well as other vandalized public infrastructures, as well as being responsible for economic sabotage and putting Nigerians’ lives in danger.

Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant to the Minister for Public Communications and New Media, stated in a statement on Monday that the FCT’s (FCTA) zero tolerance for crimes, particularly vandalization of public facilities, was demonstrated by the arrest of no fewer than 50 suspects for vandalism and theft of manhole covers and the recovery of 25 stolen manhole covers.

The Minister praised the security agencies’ swift and decisive actions, describing their joint efforts as “fantastic” and providing further assurance to the FCT residents that their lives and properties are secured.

He also commended Nigerians for showing patriotism in speaking against the vandalisation, adding that “safeguarding public amenities is first and foremost, the duty of Nigerians, who are the owners and users of the amenities”.

The FCT Minister reaffirmed that “the government will always act promptly” and that Nigerians, especially those who live there, should continue to use social media as effectively as they did with the removal of manhole covers.
