Chelsea Handler’s opening monologue for the Critics’ Choice Awards left angry reviews on Ariana Grande’s fans.
The comedian took to the stage for the third time as the 30th annual California awards ceremony began. And she made no mistake by swatting at the audience’s famous faces. However, her jibe toward Wicked star Ariana Grande in Barker Hanger and even worse online appeared to go down like a balloon.
In her skit, Chelsea criticized Ariana’s boyfriend Ethan Slater. She made fun of the fact that “we’re going to spend the night in this room celebrating all the love and success.” Some of our most cherished young stars are now fully mature and successful. Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande are all nominated tonight. And now Ariana has a munchkin’s heart.
But the comment was met with an awkward silence, leading Chelsea to tell the audience: “That’s good news, everybody”.
Fans online weren’t impressed either, and quickly let their voices be heard on Twitter/X. One user gasped: “NOT CHELSEA HANDLER CALLING OUT ARIANA FOR ETHAN??? SHE WENT THERE”. Another noted that “help chelsea handler said” and that “no one laughed nor the camera panted to Ariana LOLOL” now that she has found love with a munchkin.
And touching on the awkward moment in the audience, one user admitted: “the silence is killing me”, while another said: “the way no one laughed! they should’ve had jennifer coolidge host”. A third added: “IM CRYING LITERALLY NOBODY FOUND THAT FUNNY. THE SILENCE IS DEAFENING”
Chelsea criticized Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni for their ongoing legal battles elsewhere in her skit. “We’ve been through a lot lately, not just here in Los Angeles, but our entire country, waking up every day without knowing what news we will hear that will disappoint or horrify us,” said Chelsea. Oh no, it’s crucial to have a distraction during these kinds of situations, and that’s why I want to express my gratitude to Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni.
Thank you for providing us with that distraction. I’m grateful. I think we’re all grateful. I think we’re good. No matter which side you’re on, everyone in this room, in my opinion, can agree that there’s a possibility of a sequel. It ends with us, guys”.
