APC Wins Ungogo, Kano Municipal Bye-Elections Amid Low Turnout

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured victory in the Ungogo and Kano Municipal State Assembly by-elections in Kano State, winning both seats in polls marked by low voter turnout.

In Kano Municipal Constituency, the APC candidate, Aliyu Daneji, polled 7,484 votes to clinch the seat and earn representation in the Kano State House of Assembly.

Declaring the result, the Returning Officer, Professor Ibrahim Siraj, said Daneji met all legal requirements, having scored the highest number of valid votes cast.

“Having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of valid votes cast, Aliyu Daneji is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” Siraj announced.

Similarly, in Ungogo Constituency, the APC candidate, Aminu Sa’ad, emerged victorious after securing 8,975 votes.

The Returning Officer for the constituency, Professor Ali Abdullahi, declared: “Aminu Sa’ad, having scored the highest number of votes cast in this election, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected.”

Major opposition parties — including the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) — did not participate in the elections and were absent from the ballot.

Despite the APC’s clean sweep, voter turnout was reportedly low across several polling units monitored during the exercise.

Reacting to the development, the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kano State, Ambassador Abdu Zango, attributed the low turnout to the timing of the by-elections and the limited participation of political parties.

“The turnout was relatively low, and this can be linked to the timing of the by-elections as well as the fact that not all political parties participated,” Zango said. “However, the process was peaceful, and the commission ensured that all necessary guidelines were strictly followed.”
