In a ceremony this week, King Charles honored Dame Anna Wintour with her signature glasses.

Vogue magazine’s editor-in-chief, 75, was made a Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour in an investiture held at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday. She was appointed by King Charles, 76, at the Palace for “services to fashion”.

It’s described as a “special award granted to those who have made a major contribution to the arts, science, medicine, or government lasting over a long period of time”. Anna’s position on the King’s first birthday honors list in 2023 was made known, and it was revealed that she would do so.

For the occasion, Anna chose to wear a white top underneath her blazer and a grey jacket with a matching skirt. The media executive donned a statement-looking purple necklace and grey boots as part of her outfit.

Although the honoured guest was visible outside the venue wearing her signature dark glasses, Anna, who had not yet donned her usual accessory, received her medal from King Charles. She’s previously described her sunglasses as a “prop”, telling BBC News last year: “They help me be seen and not be seen”.

Anna has received honors at the Palace before, and this is not for the first time. The late Queen had previously appointed her as Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and then as Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE).

She stated this week outside the venue, “It’s wonderful to be back at Buckingham Palace, and I was completely shocked and overjoyed to be given this great honor.” The Queen gave me my medal the last time I was here, and we both agreed that we had been working for a very long time, and His Majesty asked if this meant I would stop working, and I responded with a vehement “no” when I said, “Then I asked the question, I was going to stop working.

George V established the Order of the Companions of Honour in 1917 to “recognise services of national importance”. There are said to be 65 members at any one time though the Royal Family’s website adds: “Non-British nationals, including Commonwealth figures, can be honorary members of the Order, and count as additional to the main 65”.

The late Dame Maggie Smith, Sir Elton John, and Sir David Attenborough are just a few of the famous people who have previously received the award. Princess Kate became the first member of the Royal Family to receive the honor in a ceremony attended by her father-in-law, King Charles, in which year she was crowned the Order’s Companion of the Companions of Honor.
