Akwa Ibom Govt To Commence Payment Of N80, 000 New Minimum Wage, Arrears
Beginning with the January 2025 salaries and with arrears effective from November 2024, the Akwa Ibom State Government will begin implementing the new N80, 000 minimum wage for verified employees in its employ.
At the State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ)’s (Ikot Ekpene Udo, Nsit Ubium Local Government Area) 2025 Thanksgiving Service, the state governor, Pastor Umo Eno, made the announcement.
The governor commended the Akwa Ibom NUJ for working with his government as partners in the implementation of his administration’s ARISE Agenda while keeping their patriotism and professionalism in their reporting.
He urged those who defrauded the state to abstain so that there can be more collaboration and advancement.
Comrade Amos Etuk, the current head of the State’s State Council, provided a dignifying leadership, and he praised the state government’s commitment to finish the Union Secretariat during his tenure as chairman.

Etuk also made an announcement about the donation of an SUV to the chairman’s official vehicle and a saloon car to each of the eleven Union State Working Committee members.
“About the issues of my workers, we knew certainly that we would pay workers N80, 000 as we promised, but we only said that we should do verification. The Head of Service will present the report to me tomorrow, according to what I’ve heard.
” Once that report is presented, for those that were verified, we will pay from 1st November, this January. No letter from anyone is required. Don’t let anyone trick you into thinking that I will do it for you. If you haven’t been verified into the Akwa Ibom State Civil Service, I will not pay you, irrespective of threats of strike action. For those that have been verified, this January, I’ll pay you from 1st November. The governor stated that it is our commitment, and that he will not disagree with what we say.
Governor Eno was reassured of his commitment to prioritize the welfare of the Akwa Ibom workforce, in line with his pact, in light of his administration’s efforts to address the N97 billion backlog of gratuities and other arrears of entitlements for state employees as well as other expressions of goodwill toward civil servants in the state.
In his words”, Akwa Ibom workers, we are on course. Because you supported us, we now have a pact with you. Because we are aware that you are our backbone, we will work with you to make sure that your welfare is paramount and continues to be. Don’t let anyone mislead you
Governor Eno argued that while there is no State Government in Nigeria that treats workers the way I have, I stand to be challenged. He argued that this was done in an effort to promote unnecessary self-gratification and that the State government consistently threatened to take industrial action.
Comrade Amos Etuk, the chairman of the NUJ’s Akwa Ibom State Council, thanked the members of the organization for their special grace in keeping the fourth estate of the realm in the face of mounting difficulties, and thanked Governor Umo for making the work for journalists through his media-friendly disposition in his thanksgiving speech at the event.
