Air Pollution Fuels Lung Cancer Among Non-Smokers -Study

According to a study released on Tuesday, air pollution is making more of the most common form of lung cancer in non-smokers and hitting women and people in southeast Asia particularly hard.

2.5 million people will be diagnosed with lung cancer in 2022, according to the study, which was released on World Cancer Day in the Lancet Respiratory Medicine journal.

There were almost a million cases of women’s cancer, but the majority were men.

One key subtype of lung cancer — adenocarcinoma — has become predominant among women in 185 countries, the authors wrote in the Chinese-funded study.

According to the study, “air pollution can be regarded as an important factor that contributes to the emerging prevalence of adenocarcinoma, which accounts for 53 to 70% of lung cancer cases among people who have never smoked worldwide,”

Between 2020 and 2022, they discovered that it increased between men and women, with women accounting for about six in ten cases, with the latter having the highest growth rate.

The researchers continued to add that the prevalence of lung cancer is increasing among those who have never smoked because smoking is still declining in many nations around the world.

According to estimates, lung cancer in those who have never smoked accounts for the fifth-highest incidence of cancer-related mortality worldwide, almost exclusively as adenocarcinoma and most frequently in women and Asian populations.

Based on data from monitors like the World Health Organization, the study examined statistical research.

East Asia, particularly China, had the highest levels of adenocarcinoma associated with air pollution, according to the researchers.

According to them, “the prevalence of household burning of solid fuels for heating and cooking could contribute to lung cancer” among non-smokers Chinese women.
