A woodworm infestation is a surprise surprise to Laura Hamilton’s new home in Mallorca. The 42-year-old property expert and A Place in the Sun presenter purchased the house in Pollença back in August, agreeing to buy it in its existing condition. Due to the property’s dated decor and old furniture, it required the completion of a significant renovation project.

Laura had to remove a portion of the roof to deal with the problem after discovering woodworm in some areas of the house while the remodeling project was being done.

Woodworm larvae are wood-boring beetles’ larvae, which tunnel and burrow wood and harm it. Untreated, common species leave holes and powdery dust, weakening wood and potentially compromising structural integrity, such as the Furniture Beetle and Longhorn Beetle.

The A Place in the Sun presenter uncovered a serious woodworm infestation that forced her to make major repairs
The presenter of A Place in the Sun had to deal with a significant woodworm infestation after discovering it (Instagram).

Laura posed for a photo inside the home, standing beneath the exposed roof area where the roof had been removed.

She captioned the post: “I recently viewed a property in Spain… (not @myrenovationinthesun thankfully) that had some serious damage… and this was all caused by WOODWORM. Your home can be seriously harmed by a wordworm infestation. Woodworms can eat through timber fiber, causing extensive repairs to your building’s structure. Worst of all, they’re nearly impossible to spot until the damage is done”.

Laura then outlined steps you can take to address the infestations. She listed: “1. Identify: Look for tiny holes and powdery dust (frass) as signs of activity. 2. Determine if it’s active or structural. If you’re unsure, consult a professional.

” 3. To prevent spreading, move affected items away from other types of wood. 4. For more severe or structural infestations, use DIY woodworm treatment. 5. Replace or repair wood that has been damaged. 6. Keep wood dry, improve ventilation, and apply wood preservative. “She concluded her steps with this advice, writing:” If you are unsure whether a property has woodworm before you buy it, get a survey! “

Laura finally had the opportunity to work on her own piece of paradise when she purchased her home earlier this year after years of helping others find their dream homes abroad.

Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, back in September, Laura said:” It’s a big renovation project in Mallorca, even though I’ve renovated a lot of houses over the last, since I was 19, it is a new thing for me renovating overseas so yeah it’s a bit different! Although it will have some challenges, it’s really nice because I’ll have to find my place in the sun firsthand and have personally gone through the experience as well. I’ll be living and breathing the whole thing! “

She added of the property:” I’m a pretty spontaneous person, I feel like when you know it’s right, you just know. I immediately recognized that it was the right thing after one more glance. “Taking to Instagram, Laura also shared further details on the property.
