Bill, Hillary Clinton To Testify In US House Epstein Probe

Bill and Hillary Clinton will testify in a US House investigation surrounding deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, a spokesman for the ex-president said, heading off a potential vote to hold the couple in contempt.

The Epstein affair continues to cast a long shadow over Washington, entangling some of the most prominent names in US politics and highlighting the sharp partisan battles that have shaped the scandal.

A court, meanwhile, is due to hear a request on Wednesday to block access to investigative files linked to Epstein, the New York Times reported, after victims said their names had not been redacted.

The Justice Department released last week what it said would be the final batch of pages, photos and videos from the Epstein files, adding fuel to a political drama that has put pressure on President Donald Trump.

But the department was left scrambling after names of alleged victims — who were supposed to be anonymized — were left unredacted, according to lawyers quoted by the Times.

In a letter to judges, Brad Edwards and Brittany Henderson from the Florida legal firm Edwards Henderson cited an email published in the cache of documents “listing 32 minor child victims, with only one name redacted and 31 left visible”.

Another woman said that her full address had been published in the files.

The lawyers requested an “immediate takedown” of the government website showing the files.

District Judge Richard M. Berman said in a short order that he would hold a hearing on Wednesday, adding: “I am not certain how helpful I can be.”

On Sunday the Justice Department said it was “working around the clock” to make further redactions to the files after New York Times journalists had found dozens of naked photos that include people’s faces.

Those photos have since been largely removed or redacted, the Times reported.

‘Setting a precedent’

The House Rules Committee had advanced resolutions accusing the Clintons of defying subpoenas to appear in person to explain their links to Epstein, who died in custody in 2019.

The couple had originally refused to appear before lawmakers examining how authorities handled earlier investigations into the disgraced financier, who had connections and correspondence with the world’s business and political elite.

But Clinton spokesman Angel Urena said on X that “the former President and former Secretary of State will be there. They look forward to setting a precedent that applies to everyone.”

Democrats say the probe is being weaponized to attack political opponents of Trump — himself a longtime Epstein associate who has not been called to testify — rather than to conduct legitimate oversight.

Trump spent months trying to block the disclosure of investigative files linked to Epstein, who moved in elite circles for years, cultivating ties with billionaires, politicians, academics and celebrities.

Neither Trump nor the Clintons have been accused of criminal wrongdoing related to Epstein’s activities.

In letters where they initially refused to appear in Washington, the Clintons had argued that the subpoenas were invalid because they lacked a clear legislative purpose.

Republicans say the Democratic couple’s past links to the business tycoon, including Bill Clinton’s use of his private jet in the early 2000s, justify in‑person questioning under oath.

Instead, the couple submitted sworn written statements describing their knowledge of Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence for sex trafficking.

Bill Clinton acknowledged flying on Epstein’s plane for Clinton Foundation-related humanitarian work, but said he never visited his private island.

Hillary Clinton said she had no meaningful interactions with Epstein, never flew on his plane and never visited his island.

After the Clintons agreed to testify, the Rules Committee decided Monday evening to suspend its vote on the contempt proceedings.

Doohan to be Haas reserve driver

Australian Jack Doohan has secured a role as reserve driver at Haas after being released by the Alpine team.

The 23-year-old, the son of five-time MotoGP champion Mick Doohan, competed in six grands prix for Alpine last year before being replaced by Argentine Franco Colapinto.

Doohan joins Ryo Hirakawa as one of two reserve drivers at Haas. The Japanese has connections with technical partner Toyota, which has increased its role to become title sponsor this year.

Haas’ main drivers are Briton Oliver Bearman and Frenchman Esteban Ocon.

Doohan described Haas as “the ideal place to continue my F1 career,” which he hopes to revive.

Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu said: “The dedication required to remain sharp and prepared to race while getting to know how the team works and so on, it’s challenging for any driver – especially one who’s obviously still very keen to race again at this level.”

FCT Strike: NLC, TUC Direct Workers To Resume Immediately

Labour unions have asked their members and affiliates under the payroll of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to resume work with immediate effect.

The directive, contained in a joint circular by the TUC and NLC on Tuesday, followed a marathon conciliatory meeting between the unions and the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike.

“Consequently, all JUAC members and all affiliates of the TUC and NLC working in the Ministry of the FCT (MFCT) are hereby directed to resume work immediately,” the circular, signed by the TUC Secretary General. N.A Toro and NLC Ag. General Secretary, Benson Upah, read in part.

“All affiliates are enjoined to comply strictly with this directive in the interest of industrial peace and harmony, in good faith.”

According to the labour unions, the breakthrough meeting was brokered by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on FCT, Mohammed Bomoi, during which the grievances that have grounded activities at the FCTA secretariat since January 19 were addressed.

The unions said all complaints by the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC) were fully “addressed to the satisfaction of all parties involved” with Wike assuring organised labour of “mutual respect and sustained engagement going forward to ensure a harmonious working relationship”.

Other resolutions reached included a deal that “no worker shall be victimized in any way for participating in the industrial action” and that all “outstanding cases at the National Industrial Court (NIC) related to this industrial dispute shall be withdrawn immediately by the parties.”

The workers, under the umbrella of JUAC, had gone on strike over issues like non-remittance of statutory deductions (Pension and National Housing Fund), delays in payment of promotion of arrears, and the conduct of the promotion exercise among other issues.

The workers’ strike led to the shutdown of activities in departments and agencies of the FCTA and FCDA. That led Wike to sue the JUAC.

On January 27, the National Industrial Court directed the workers to suspend the industrial action. While it held that the issue is a trade dispute, the defendants’ right to go on strike was not absolute.

The court said that since the dispute had been brought to it, the strike must stop until the case is determined.

Following the verdict, the FCTA directed the workers to resume work immediately, but the NLC told its members to continue with the industrial action.

On Monday, the National Industrial Court (NIC) issued an interim order restraining the NLC and the TUC, and three others, from protesting on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.

Justice Emmanuel Sublim, while ruling on an ex parte application filed by Wike and the FCTA,  granted the interim order restraining the 1st to 5th respondents and their privies or agents from embarking on strike pending the hearing of the motion on notice.

He asked the 5th-9th defendants, who are security agencies, to ensure no breakdown of law and order.

The exparte motion, which was filed by Counsel to Wike and the FCTA, Ogwu Onoja, submitted that the Chairman of the FCT council had sent a message of mobilization to members and affiliated unions for a protest on 3rd February.

Infantino ‘infantile’ for wanting to lift Russia ban

Ukraine’s sports minister has called Fifa president Gianni Infantino “irresponsible” and “infantile” for saying that world football’s governing body will look at lifting a ban on Russia.

Russian national teams and clubs were suspended from all competitions by Fifa and Uefa in February 2022 after the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

With the war still going on, Infantino has said “this ban has not achieved anything” and “has just created more frustration and hatred”.

He added: “Having girls and boys from Russia being able to play football games in other parts of Europe would help.”

In response, Ukraine sports minister Matvii Bidnyi said in a social media post: “Gianni Infantino’s words sound irresponsible – not to say infantile.

“They detach football from the reality in which children are being killed.

Infantino was awarded the Russian Order of Friendship medal by president Vladimir Putin after Russia hosted the 2018 World Cup.

However, since Russia’s ban, they have been unable to compete at the 2022 World Cup and and Uefa’s Euro 2024 and the country will not be part of the 2026 World Cup.

Russia has not completely stopped playing international footbal as they have played matches against non-Western nations without needing the permission of Fifa or Uefa.

“War is a crime, not politics,” added Bidnyi. “It is Russia that politicises sport and uses it to justify aggression.

“I share the position of the Ukrainian Association of Football, which also warns against Russia’s return to international competitions.

“As long as Russians continue killing Ukrainians and politicising sport, their flag and national symbols have no place among people who respect values such as justice, integrity and fair play.”

Last year, Ukraine criticised the International Paralympic Committee’s (IPC) decision to lift a ban on athletes from Russia and its close ally Belarus.

The Ukrainian National Paralympic Committee said the IPC had allowed Russia and Belarus to “raise their flags, drenched in the blood of hundreds of thousands of people”.

Despite the IPC lifting its ban, Russian and Belarusian Para-athletes will not be at next month’s Winter Paralympics.

Although the IPC oversees the Games, there are four separate governing bodies in charge of the six sports taking place in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Why is Benzema’s Al Hilal transfer linked to Ronaldo?

Two of the most popular footballers in the world have caused a stir in Saudi football on the final day of the midyear transfer window.

Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and French football icon Karim Benzema, both of whom play in the Saudi Pro League (SPL), were in the news on Monday for their off-field actions.

Star forward Benzema moved from Al-Ittihad to Al Hilal, with the transfer confirmed hours after Ronaldo was not named for Al-Nassr’s SPL game against Al Riyadh.

Here’s a breakdown of what happened on transfer deadline day in the SPL:

Why did Benzema move from Al-Ittihad to Al Hilal?

The former Ballon d’Or winner’s move is seen as an ambitious one, as Al Hilal are the most successful club in Saudi football and the current league leaders.

Despite winning the SPL with Al-Ittihad last year, the 38-year-old wanted to join the club that has won 21 league titles and four Asian Championships.

Coached by two-time Champions League finalist Simone Inzaghi, they stunned Manchester City at last year’s FIFA Club World Cup 4-3, knocking out Pep Guardiola’s team.

Benzema’s arrival was announced with fanfare by the record Saudi champions on social media.

Why did Ronaldo miss Al-Nassr’s game on Monday?

Ronaldo was absent from Al-Nassr’s SPL match against Al-Riyadh amid reports he is unhappy about the transfer situation at his club.

Ronaldo has scored 17 goals for the club this season.

Portuguese media outlet A Bola reported that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is unhappy that Al-Nassr have not strengthened their squad as they challenge for the league title.

The Portuguese superstar forward decided to recuse himself from head coach Jorge Jesus’ squad because Al-Nassr, the second-place team in the SPL ‍table, had not made a significant addition before the closure of the transfer window.

Heading into the game, Al-Nassr were second behind Al Hilal, which is also backed by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) and has been linked with Ronaldo’s former Real Madrid teammate Karim Benzema.

How is Benzema’s move linked to Ronaldo?

Benzema’s transfer from the previous SPL champions to the most successful club is seen as a major threat to Ronaldo’s hopes of being crowned league champion, despite prompting a wave of top football players – including Benzema – to move to the Saudi league.

Ronaldo, who turns 41 on Thursday, has scored 91 goals ‌in 95 league matches for Al-Nassr since he arrived in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, ‍in January 2023.

SPL leaders Al Hilal are one point ahead of Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr.

The former Real Madrid striker, a teammate of Ronaldo’s at the Spanish giant, led Al-Ittihad to the title last year, as well as the King’s Cup.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo is still waiting for his first league title since moving to Saudi Arabia in 2022, and has seen his main rival strengthen with the addition of five-time Champions League winner Benzema.

What have Al-Nassr said about Ronaldo, and could he leave the club?

Al-Nassr CEO Jose Semedo declined to comment, according to Saudi media.

Ronaldo is not injured, ill or out of favour with Jesus, ESPN reported.

Neither does ‌he intend to leave Al-Nassr, who signed him to a lucrative two-year contract extension in June 2025.

According to CBS Sports, ‌senior club officials understand Ronaldo’s vexation with the PIF, ‌the Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund that owns Al-Nassr, Al Hilal and two other Pro League sides.

Could Al-Nassr still sign more players to placate Ronaldo?

Austerity hinders fight against wildfires in Argentina’s Patagonia

Wildfires are sweeping through Argentina’s Patagonia region, consuming more than 450sq km (175sq miles) of native forests, including parts of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Los Alerces National Park.

Thousands of people have been evacuated as flames spread through Chubut province, threatening ancient alerce trees, which can live for more than 3,600 years.

The crisis has intensified criticism of President Javier Milei’s aggressive austerity policies.

His administration’s “chainsaw” spending cuts have slashed the National Fire Management Service’s budget by 71 percent in real terms compared with last year, according to the environmental group FARN.

“These fires are absolutely predictable,” said Ariel Slipak, an economist at FARN, arguing that Milei has prioritised fiscal balance “at all costs” over emergency preparedness.

The burned area has surpassed last summer’s entire fire season damage of 325sq km (125sq miles). As firefighters battle strong winds and high temperatures, Milei declared a state of emergency on Thursday, allocating about $69m for firefighting efforts.

Environmental advocates point to climate change as an exacerbating factor with Greenpeace’s Hernan Giardini saying: “To continue denying or underestimating the effects of climate change, which science and the ecological movement have long warned about, is a political irresponsibility that will be paid for by forests and homes.”

Milei, who has called climate change a “socialist lie” and is considering withdrawing from the Paris Agreement, faces mounting pressure as the fires have now destroyed an area more than twice the size of Buenos Aires.
