⌈VIDEO⌋ Sit-At-Home: Onitsha Market Traders Comply With Soludo’s Directive, Reopen Shops

Traders of the Onitsha Main Market have reopened their shops in compliance with a directive by the Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo.

Soludo had last Monday ordered that the market be shut down for one week due to the perceived compliance with the Monday sit-at-home order by non-state actors.

The governor also warned that if traders failed to open at the end of the one-week shutdown, the market would be closed for another week, and subsequently for longer periods.

However, a week after economic activities were grounded, the traders were seen trooping into the market.

A visit to the market on Monday, Channels Television observed that many traders resumed their businesses as early as 8:45am.

Starting from Egerton, to Ose food stuff market, down to The Young Park, one of the major entrances into the Main Market, many traders are seen setting up their wares. From Emeka Offor Plaza to Sokoto road, and to Lagos line and Marine, many traders have opened their shops while customers have started to patronize opened shops. It is clear that the traders are complying to Government’s directives of ignoring the situation at home order.

Sit-At-Home ‘Order’

The order, which has been in place for about four years, disrupted economic and social activities across the South-East and has been publicly condemned by the Soludo administration.

The state government had urged residents to go about their lawful activities without fear and shunning the illegal order, which it describes as an economic sabotage on the region.

Security personnel, including the police and the army, among others, were later deployed to seal the market gates and ensure compliance.

For years, parts of Anambra State have observed a Monday sit-at-home that disrupted commercial and social activities, leaving markets, schools, and workplaces deserted.

The practice, imposed by non-state actors in the South-East, has been widely criticised for harming the state’s economy, forcing traders, transport workers, and students indoors, especially in hubs like Onitsha.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo has led efforts to end the shutdown.

In April 2022, he formally declared the sit-at-home over, announced amnesty for youths in hideouts, and promised a peace and reconciliation committee.

Grammy winners 2026: Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar and ICE criticism

Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny has won the coveted Album of the Year honour at the Grammy Awards, while Kendrick Lamar and SZA took home Record of the Year for “Luther”.

Among other notable wins, Olivia Dean was named on Sunday Best New Artist, and siblings Billie Eilish and Finneas earned Song of the Year.

The main broadcast was hosted by comedian Trevor Noah.

Bad Bunny, who is due to headline the Super Bowl LX half-time show next week, also used his acceptance speech to voice criticism of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.

Accepting his award for Best Album, he started by saying, “Before I thank God, I want to say: ICE out!”

“We’re not savages, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens. We are human beings, and we are Americans,” he added.

Billie Eilish also referenced ICE during the ceremony. While accepting Song of the Year, Eilish, who has previously criticised ICE policies, said, “no one is illegal on stolen land”, in an apparent reference to how the US was built on occupying land that originally belonged, in many cases, to Native American communities.

Just before Bad Bunny won his first televised award, he and Noah also engaged in a conversation touching on ICE and Puerto Rico.

“If things keep getting worse in America, can I come live with you in Puerto Rico?” Noah asked. “Trevor, I have some news for you. Puerto Rico is part of America,” Bad Bunny replied.

Several artists, including Kehlani and Gloria Estefan, took the opportunity to voice support for immigrant communities. On the red carpet, many celebrities made a statement wearing “ICE out” pins, including Justin and Hailey Bieber and Joni Mitchell.

Will Seahawks stop Patriots’ record bid? Lowdown on Super Bowl 2026

The NFL’s 2025 season has provided the most wide-open race for the Super Bowl in years.

Now just the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks remain and they will meet on Sunday to decide the NFL champions.

It is a title New England have held six times but this is their first Super Bowl since 2019 and the departure of legendary quarterback Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick.

A revitalised Patriots team have come from nowhere to reach Super Bowl 60 in California and secure a record-extending 12th appearance in the NFL showpiece.

The Seahawks have reached their fourth Super Bowl, and their first since 2015, when the Patriots denied them back-to-back championships.

Now a Briton could become the first overseas coach to win arguably the biggest game in world sport having helped turn Seattle back into title contenders.

How the Patriots can make NFL history

Brady and head coach Belichick led New England to nine Super Bowls between 2002 and 2019, winning six.

That tied the record for most Super Bowl wins with the Pittsburgh Steelers so the Patriots will go clear if they win at Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara.

Last season, New England finished with a 4-13 record under Jerod Mayo, who was replaced by another coach who won the Super Bowl as a player with the Patriots, Mike Vrabel.

The ex-Tennessee Titans coach rebuilt the Patriots’ roster and they improved to 14-3. That 10-win swing is tied for the biggest turnaround from one season to the next – and the Patriots are the first of those teams to reach the Super Bowl.

Who are the Super Bowl quarterbacks?

New England’s Drake Maye grew up in North Carolina and attended the previous Super Bowl held at Levi’s Stadium 10 years ago.

A 13-year-old Maye and his father watched the Carolina Panthers lose to Denver. Now he returns to Santa Clara as one of the top candidates for this season’s Most Valuable Player award.

Maye is the ninth second-year quarterback to reach the Super Bowl and aims to become the first to win it since Russell Wilson with Seattle in 2014. At 23, he will also be the second youngest QB to start a Super Bowl after Dan Marino in 1985.

Like Maye, Seattle’s current quarterback Sam Darnold was also the third overall pick when he was drafted in 2018 but his NFL journey has become a redemption story.

After struggling with the New York Jets, then Carolina, Darnold spent the 2023 season as the San Francisco 49ers’ back-up, before being thrust into the starters’ job at Minnesota.

Who are the Super Bowl favourites?

New England, Seattle and Denver shared the regular season’s best record of 14-3, but despite their history and having an MVP contender at quarterback, the Patriots are Super Bowl underdogs for the first time since Brady won his first in 2002.

Seattle are strong favourites with the bookmakers having emerged from the ultra-competitive NFC West division to clinch the NFC’s top seed, before beating divisional rivals San Francisco and the Los Angeles Rams again in the play-offs.

Darnold has formed a devastating connection with Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who led the league for receiving yards, and Seattle’s defence allowed the fewest points (17.2 per game).

The team which claimed the Seahawks’ one Super Bowl win in 2014 was renowned for its Legion of Boom defence.

Who is performing the half-time show?

Puerto Rican pop star Bad Bunny will be the first solo male Latin artist to perform the half-time show and is expected to be the first to perform their set entirely in Spanish.

The 31-year-old was Spotify’s most streamed artist in four of the past six years. He is also an actor, has hosted Saturday Night Live and been a WWE 24/7 champion.

American rock band Green Day, who hail from the San Francisco Bay Area, will play an opening ceremony to help usher Super Bowl MVPs onto the field.

Both they and Bad Bunny have been critics of US president Donald Trump and his administration, with the singer saying he avoided the US on his current world tour because of concerns that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents would conduct raids on fans at his concerts.

Will Trump attend the Super Bowl?

To play this video you need to enable JavaScript in your browser.

Trump became the first sitting president to attend America’s biggest game last year when he watched the Philadelphia Eagles prevent a Kansas City Chiefs three-peat in New Orleans.

Trump told the New York Post that he will not be attending this year, though, as the game at the home of the San Francisco 49ers is “just too far away”.

Asked about the Super Bowl performers, Trump added: “I’m anti-them. I think it’s a terrible choice. All it does is sow hatred.”

Turning Point USA, which was co-founded by late Trump ally Charlie Kirk, says it will be holding an alternative half-time show but is yet to confirm details.

There is also confusion over whether ICE agents will be deployed around the Super Bowl, with government and local officials giving conflicting information.

How to follow the Super Bowl

Super Bowl 60 will kick-off on Sunday at 23:30 GMT and be broadcast live on Channel 5, Sky Sports and DAZN.

You can listen to live radio coverage on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds and follow live text coverage via the BBC Sport website and app.

Cuba denies security threat accusations as US raises pressure

The Cuban government has rejected accusations that it poses a threat to the security of the United States, insisting that it stands ready to cooperate with Washington.

The Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on Monday calling for dialogue and stressing that the Caribbean island does not support “terrorism”. The declaration comes amid a spike in tension after the abduction of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro last month, which was part of President Donald Trump’s drive for US domination of the Western Hemisphere.

“The Cuban people and the American people benefit from constructive engagement, lawful cooperation, and peaceful coexistence,” the statement from Havana said.

“Cuba reaffirms its willingness to maintain a respectful and reciprocal dialogue, oriented toward tangible results, with the United States government, based on mutual interest and international law.”

The statement came hours after Trump said diplomatic contact with Cuba had been revived, noting that his administration is talking to the “highest people” in the Cuban government.

“Cuba is a failing nation for a long time. But now it doesn’t have Venezuela to prop it up,” Trump told reporters late on Sunday.

Venezuela was Cuba’s top energy supplier, but since US forces toppled Maduro, the flow of oil to the island has all but come to a halt.

The US has also been intercepting and seizing Venezuelan oil tankers in the Caribbean – a move that critics say amounts to piracy.

Beyond oil supplies, Cuba had close economic and security relations with Maduro’s government. Nearly 50 Cuban soldiers were killed during the abduction of the Venezuelan leader.

The Trump administration has also been pressuring Mexico to stop supplying Cuba with oil. A total energy siege could lead to a serious humanitarian crisis in the country.

‘Malign actors’

Washington has had hostile relations with Havana since the rise of the late President Fidel Castro after the communist revolution that overthrew US-backed authoritarian leader Fulgencio Batista in 1959.

In 2021, during his first term, Trump listed Cuba as a “state sponsor of terrorism”.

Last week, the White House released a memorandum labelling the Cuban government an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to the US.

The document accused Havana of aligning with “malign actors”, including China and Russia. That is despite the US itself seeking improved relations with Moscow and Beijing. A recently released US National Defence Strategy downplayed the pair as a security threat.

“The Cuban regime continues to spread its communist ideas, policies, and practices around the Western Hemisphere, threatening the foreign policy of the United States,” the White House memo said.

On Monday, the Cuban government denied these accusations, stressing that it does not host foreign military or intelligence bases.

“Cuba categorically declares that it does not harbor, support, finance, or permit terrorist or extremist organizations,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

“Our country maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward the financing of terrorism and money laundering, and is committed to the prevention, detection, and combating of illicit financial activities, in accordance with international standards.”

The statement represents a softening of tones from a government in the Americas that has long represented defiance towards the US.

While the US has openly pushed to control Venezuela’s vast oil industry, Trump has suggested that his top demand from Cuba relates to the treatment of Cuban Americans – a large constituency for his Republican Party in the state of Florida.

“A lot of people that live in our country are treated very badly by Cuba,” Trump told reporters on Sunday.

“They all voted for me, and we want them to be treated well. We’d like to be able to have them go back to a home in their country, which they haven’t seen their family, their country for many, many decades.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is of Cuban descent and a former Florida senator, has been pushing a hardline approach to Latin America.

On Sunday, Pope Leo said he was troubled by the escalating tensions between the US and Cuba.
