US Justice Department charges man with assault after Ilhan Omar town hall

The United States Department of Justice has filed a criminal complaint against the man who sprayed Representative Ilhan Omar with apple cider vinegar during a news conference.

In court records filed on Wednesday and made public on Thursday, the Justice Department accused Anthony Kazmierczak of having “forcibly assaulted, opposed, impeded, intimidated and interfered” with Omar while she was performing her public duties.

The complaint included an affidavit from Derek Fossi, a special agent assigned to the Minnesota field office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Fossi witnessed the incident. He described how Kazmierczak abruptly stood up and interrupted Omar while she held a town hall in her hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota, on January 27.

“Kazmierczak had a syringe in his hand, and as he continued to rapidly approach Representative Omar, he sprayed her with an initially unidentified liquid from the syringe,” Fossi said in the affidavit.

Omar had been speaking to the town hall about her outrage over the surge in federal immigration agents to the Minneapolis area, which is part of the congressional district she represents.

The administration of President Donald Trump, a Republican, has targeted the Democrat-led area in part because of its large Somali American community, of which Omar is a member.

She blamed the leadership of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and specifically Secretary Kristi Noem, for the violence that had occurred as a result of the immigration raids.

“Renee Good should be alive. Alex Pretti should still be alive,” Omar said, referring to two US citizens who were recently killed in shootings involving federal agents.

Good was shot in her car by an agent from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on January 7, while Pretti was killed when two Customs and Border Patrol Protection agents reportedly opened fire on January 24.

Omar then called for accountability from the Trump administration and reform to its “reckless and lawless” practices.

“ICE cannot be reformed. It cannot be rehabilitated. We must abolish ICE for good. And DHS Secretary Kristi Noem must resign or face impeachment,” Omar said, seconds before Kazmierczak stood from his front-row seat and sprayed her.

Fossi later explained he heard Kazmierczak say as he turned away, “She’s not resigning. You’re splitting Minnesotans apart.”

The incident caused grave concern, particularly in the immediate aftermath, when it was not clear what substance Omar had been struck with – and whether it was hazardous.

Thursday’s affidavit outlined several incidents where Kazmierczak had been critical of or appeared to threaten violence against the representative.

According to the court document, investigators interviewed a “close associate” of Kazmierczak, who overheard him saying on the phone several years ago, “Someone should kill that b****.” The interviewee allegedly told the investigators that they believed Kazmierczak was referring to Omar.

The affidavit also displayed a cartoon Kazmierczak posted onto his Facebook account criticising Omar for her role in the so-called “defund the police” movement.

Omar had called to “rebuild” the Minneapolis Police Department in the wake of the 2020 murder of George Floyd, a Black man whose heart stopped while an officer knelt on his neck.

A member of Congress’s progressive flank, nicknamed “The Squad”, Omar has long been a target for right-wing criticism.

President Trump, in particular, has repeatedly mocked Omar and spread false rumours about her, including suggestions of incest.

During a midterm campaign stop this week in Clive, Iowa, he questioned her patriotism and that of other immigrants.

“They have to show that they can love our country. They have to be proud. Not like Ilhan Omar,” he told a booing crowd. “Did you see that wise guy? You know, she’s always talking about, ‘The Constitution provides me with the following.’ The Constitution? She comes from a country that’s a disaster. It’s not even a country.”

It was the latest in a string of derogatory remarks Trump had made against Somalia and Omar personally.

In a December 2 cabinet meeting, for instance,  Trump used Omar as an example of the “garbage” the US immigration system was supposedly letting in.

Omar arrived in the US at age 12 as a child refugee, fleeing Somalia’s civil war. She has served as the representative for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district since 2019.

Critics have long warned of a rise in political violence in the US, and just this week, the US Capitol Police released a report saying it had probed 14,938 “concerning statements” made against Congress members in the last year alone.

That was a significant increase over the rate in 2024, when 9,474 such threats were investigated.

Since the vinegar-spraying incident, Omar held a separate news conference to denounce the “hateful rhetoric” aimed at her since she took public office.

She added that the death threats she receives increase when the president mentions her by name. But she emphasised that she remains unbowed.

More Govs Will Join APC, Opposition Panic ‘Unnecessary’ — Sule

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has dismissed suggestions that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is discouraging the defection of more state governors, insisting that the ruling party remains open to new entrants.

Governor Sule made the remarks on Thursday in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he addressed growing concerns over the recent wave of defections to the APC.

Responding to questions about why the party [APC] appears eager to attract more governors and whether additional defections are imminent, Sule questioned the anxiety such movements generate within opposition parties.

“Why are they refusing them if they want to join? Why does the party [opposition] get panicked when another governor is leaving if the governor’s leaving doesn’t mean anything? Why will the governor’s leaving become a betrayal? Why will a governor leaving become a big problem if the governors will not make any impact?” Sule asked.

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule speaks on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

He argued that the decision of any governor to defect should not be exaggerated, particularly if such a move does not significantly affect governance or political stability.

Sule disclosed that the APC recently “welcomed its 29th serving governor,” noting that Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang had attended a party meeting following his defection.

The Nasarawa governor added that this came after the party earlier received the Governor of Taraba State, who is expected to be formally welcomed in the coming days.

“As of yesterday, we welcomed the 29th governor—that is, the governor of Plateau State, to our meeting. It was the 28th after welcoming the governor of Taraba, who will be received officially in the next two days.

“These governors are actually going to be those who are selling the party, who are also selling themselves, and who are selling Mr. President. Most likely, a few more governors will join,” he said.

APC governors in Bayelsa welcomed Douye Diri officially to the party on November 3, 2025.

The Nasarawa governor, however, dismissed fears that the growing number of APC governors could turn Nigeria into a one-party state, describing such concerns as unfounded.

“There is no way all 36 governors will belong to one party. And even if that were to happen, Nigeria would still not become a one-party state. From all indications, that scenario is not even going to occur,” the governor said.

Looking ahead to the next general election, Sule expressed confidence in the APC’s electoral prospects, stating that the party’s chances in 2027 are significantly better than they were in 2023.

He argued that the 2027 election will not be a contest between the APC and the people but will be a contest between candidates.”

Wave Of Defections

Tinubu, Eno, Oborevwori and Mbah

Since President Bola Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, the APC has recorded an influx of serving governors from opposition parties, with the trend gaining momentum in 2025 and also recently.

Among those who have defected to the ruling party are Abba Yusuf of Kano State from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP); Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers, Peter Mbah of Enugu, Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, Douye Diri of Bayelsa, and Agbu Kefas of Taraba State, all from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Most recently, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang formally defected from the PDP to the APC on Tuesday, bringing the number of APC governors to 29.

The defections have largely been linked to “internal crises” within opposition parties. However, these political shifts have intensified debate over the shape of the forthcoming 2027 general elections.

Joshua pays emotional tribute in new video

Anthony Joshua has posted a video – described as a “short message from the heart” – thanking fans for their support following the deaths of his two close friends in a car crash.

The former world heavyweight champion, 36, sustained minor injuries in the incident in Nigeria on 29 December which killed Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele.

Joshua, along with Ghami and Ayodele, were passengers in the vehicle when it collided with a stationary truck on a major road near Lagos.

Ghami and Ayodele were both pronounced dead at the scene, while Joshua was pictured being helped from the wreckage.

In a six-minute video posted on his social media channels, the British heavyweight acknowledged supporters worldwide “who were showing so much love, support through that tragic, traumatic time”.

He added: “One day my time will come and I’m not scared either at all.

“It’s actually comforting knowing I got two brothers on the other side.

The two friends were also part of Joshua’s team, with Ghami his strength and conditioning coach and Ayodele his personal trainer.

Joshua said the trio formed a close bond and were living together, adding: “We became business partners. We became hustlers. We became lieutenants. We became generals. We became everything.”

Last week, Adeniyi Kayode, 46, the chauffeur who was driving the Lexus SUV, appeared in court in Nigeria and has been charged with four offences, including causing death by dangerous driving.

Joshua continued: “Not only did their parents, their uncles, their cousins, their friends and myself lose two great men, we lost people that we dearly care about and have been major players in all of our lives.

“It’s tough. It’s really tough.”

Joshua added he will help Ghami and Ayodele’s families “achieve their goals” and “fulfill their dreams”.

“I’m sure their parents 100% are proud of them [because] I am.”

Earlier this month, Joshua returned to the gym, posting a video on Snapchat of him hitting the pads and working out, with the message “mental strength therapy”.

Gymnast Chiles could get Paris bronze medal back

US gymnast Jordan Chiles may win back a bronze medal that was stripped from her in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Chiles, 24, lost her third place finish after an appeal, with Romania’s Ana Barbosu upgraded from fourth to take bronze.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) found in favour of Barbosu in 2024, but Switzerland’s supreme court has sent the case back.

Chiles lost her medal after it was decided that an inquiry submitted by the US team about her score fell outside the one-minute time limit.

But Cas will now examine a recording that could show the challenge was lodged in time.

“In the highly exceptional circumstances of the case in question,” the Swiss Federal Tribunal said in a statement, “it considers that there is a likelihood for the audio-visual recording of the final to lead to a modification of the contested award in favour of the applicant (Chiles).”

Cas said in a statement it “can now ensure a thorough judicial review of the new evidence that has since been made available”.
