Graham Norton skewers Donald Trump in brutal swipe minutes into New Year’s Eve show

Will Arnett and Owen Cooper were guests on the Graham Norton New Year’s Eve Show on BBC One, which retrospectively examined the highlights and downfalls of 2025.

TV host Graham Norton took aim at Donald Trump minutes into his New Year’s Eve special last night.

During his review of 2025, the veteran broadcaster was quick to turn his attention to the US President’s visit to the UK to meet the Royal Family. Graham, 62, flashed up a photo of Melania Trump wearing a wide-brimmed purple hat and joked she looked like “a lamp”.

He then quipped that the statement headwear may have been worn to stop her husband from leaning in for a kiss — setting the tone for a night of trademark digs just minutes into The Graham Norton New Year’s Eve Show on BBC One.

The Irish comedian stayed on the side as he joked, “He was welcomed by the King and Queen, who were obviously happy to be photographed with him — Melania, not so much.” Graham remarked, “I’m just a lamp,” as the camera turned back to Melania’s oversized purple hat. Before retorting, “Just ignore me,” while playfully mimicking her accent, she said, “Please ignore me, I’m just a lamp.”

Yet, Graham took the gag further, Express.co.uk reports. He added: “Actually there is a security reason why Melania always wears a hat.. A nice wide brim can literally save her from a fate worse than death”” before footage showed Mr Trump attempting to kiss her on the cheek — only to be blocked by the hat.

Graham looked back at the highlights — and low points — of 2025 on the festive edition of his programme. His savage swipes came minutes into the episode of the BAFTA-winning chat show, pre-recorded ahead of its BBC One and iPlayer broadcast.

Graham and Carey Mulligan, along with Tom Hiddleston, Laura Dern, and Tim Key, sat down on the red sofa to celebrate the new year. Where Love Lives, Alison Limerick’s dance classic, provided the evening’s soundtrack.

The BBC recommissioned the programme for three more series earlier this year. Speaking at the time, the broadcaster said the programme remains one of its biggest entertainment successes, averaging 2.9 million viewers per episode across its most recent run and continuing to pull in huge numbers across social platforms including YouTube, TikTok and Instagram.

Graham, a native of Dublin, Ireland, claimed hosting the program was both a “privilege” and a “pretty pleasure,” implying that the team was already gearing up to welcome more international stars on the sofa.

Following a fatal car accident that claimed the lives of two of his close friends, British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has been discharged from a hospital in Nigeria.

The former world champion was “heavy hearted” over the loss of his friends, according to a joint statement from the Ogun and Lagos states, who said he was “heavy hearted” at home.

On Monday, a Lexus SUV carrying a 36-year-old collided with a stationary truck on a major expressway in Ogun State, close to Lagos.

The Briton went to a funeral home where his friends’ bodies were “being prepared for repatriation” after leaving the hospital on Wednesday, according to the joint statement.

Eddie Hearn, who has worked with Joshua since he won gold at the 2012 Olympics and promoted him to a professional level, paid tribute to his close friends and teammates earlier.

Hearn shared the song “Rest in peace Latz and Sina” on Instagram.

“You will be greatly missed, along with your enthusiasm and commitment to so many other outstanding traits. Throughout this extremely difficult time, I pray for strength and guidance for all of their families, friends, and of course AJ.

Oluseyi Babaseyi, a spokesman for Ogun State police, told the BBC on Wednesday that “investigations are still ongoing” and that the procedure is still “still discrete.”

The state where the accident took place, the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) in Ogun state, claimed preliminary investigations revealed the vehicle had tyre burst before colliding with the truck.

After defeating Jake Paul in Miami on December 19, Joshua, who was born in Watford to Nigerian parents, took a vacation in Nigeria.

Former world champion cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew earlier posted on X: “Thoughts and prayers to these men’s families. Tragic losses under wretched circumstances!

There is no pain in life worse than grief, so I hope he (Joshua) can move along with it.

Meet The Traitors new series line-up – from psychologist to former detective

Claudia Winkleman, Claudia Winkleman, and an all-new lineup of Traitors and Faithfuls are expected to appear on New Year’s Day.

The Traitors’ bosses have assembled the most impressive crack team of contestants ever assembled, which includes a psychologist, a former detective chief inspector, and a writer with a barrister’s training.

The 22-person group’s unique makeup, according to insiders, will make the series the most competitive ever to begin tonight. According to one executive, “given some of the people chosen, it might make the job of being a traitor much harder. It’s still pretty much all they can play for because these traits could also make them the ideal traitor. ”

Amanda, a former police officer, acknowledges that having a unique edge in the workforce might be advantageous. The 57-year-old from Brighton claims to have learned a lot about being deceptive, devious, and cunning. She continues, “I was a detective, and I have spoken with both criminals and victims frequently. To uncover the truth and break the silence, you must piece together the pieces.

To avoid being identified, you must be good at lying, have a good poker face, and be a master deflection master. On the other hand, I’m a good person, and I joined the police to assist people. Even when a big storm is brewing nearby, you must remain calm and composed. Whichever role I get to play, I would incorporate all of these abilities. ”

Before I retired, Amanda claims to be the “Detective Chief Inspector.” She continued, “I had to do a lot of things very quickly, be decisive, and precise, but I’m now very relaxed. Ellie, a psychologist, claims she also has the necessary abilities to win on the BBC show. She adds, “I’m hoping I can bring that psychological perspective on the show because I think I might be the first psychologist.” I’m going to be looking at what other contestants are up to and figuring out why they behave in particular ways. ”

When asked what she plans to contribute to the game, she replies, “Hopefully I can use all of my psychological strategies to play the game as well as possible, whether I’m a Traitor or a Faithful, whether that means developing relationships with people, deceiving others, and concealing how I really feel.” ”

Harriet Tyce, a writer of crime books like Blood Orange and The Lies You Told, has also practiced law. She also thinks she has a leg up on the Traitor and Faithful contest.

The 52-year-old admits, “I’ve watched the show and I love it. It’s one of the few TV shows I believe I have a skill set that could be useful for.” Formerly a criminal barrister, I write about crime. On the page, I spend my life creating horrible ways for people to die and commit murder. The idea that I might actually plot to murder people or find a killer is the closest I could get to that realization in real life, you know, without actually seeing blood pour. What’s not to like, to be honest? ”

The mother-of-two thinks that having children and having a legal background will help her catch any lies. She says, “I’ve had experience with clients who I’ve been absolutely certain are telling me a little less than the truth because I’ve had kids and worked in criminal justice.” The thing about this game is that if you start out believing someone, you won’t be sucked in by someone who doesn’t seem like a good person. ”

128 Journalists Killed Worldwide In 2025, IFJ Says

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) announced on Thursday that 128 journalists were killed worldwide in 2025, with more than half of those fatalities occurring in the Middle East.

According to IFJ general secretary Anthony Bellanger, the grim toll, which has increased from 2024, “is not just a statistic; it’s a global red alert for our colleagues.”

RSF claims that Israel has killed the most journalists this year, but RSF also reports that.

The Palestinian territories, where it recorded 56 media professionals being killed in 2025 as Israel’s conflict with Hamas continued in Gaza, sprang out as a result of the press group’s particular concern.

“We’ve never seen anything this severe, in such a small area, in such a short time,” Bellanger said.

In Yemen, Ukraine, Sudan, Peru, India, and other places, journalists have also been killed.

Bellanger criticized those responsible for the attacks for what he termed “impunity.”

He warned that “it allows the journalists’ killers to thrive” without justice.

The IFJ reported that 533 journalists were currently imprisoned around the world, more than double the number over the past five years.

With 143 behind bars, including Hong Kong, where authorities have been criticized by Western countries for enacting national security laws that stifle dissent, China once more ranked as the worst jailer of reporters.

Due to various counting techniques, the IFJ’s count of journalists killed is typically much higher than that of Reporters Without Borders.

Nine unintentional deaths were also included in the IFJ toll this year.

Despite reports from Reporters Without Borders that 67 journalists died while conducting their work, 93 are attributed to UNESCO.
