Sales of babies boom in Abia, police move in

Sales of babies boom in Abia, police move in

Abia police command has arrested members of three suspected child traffickers, who are baby sellers, including 17-year-old Gift Daniel, who sold her two-day-old baby boy for N670, 000.

The Police Commissioner, Mr Anthony Ogbizi, said this on Monday, while briefing newsmen in Umuahia on the activities of the command.

Ogbizi also said that the command arrested no fewer than 22 other suspected criminals, following raids by his men in the wake of renewed criminal acts in different parts of the state.

In an interview with newsmen, Daniel said that she was compelled to sell the baby due to financial difficulties.

She said that her first baby, also a boy, was sold by her own mother after delivery, hence her resolve to personally sell the second baby.

“My mother sent me away from the house, when I became pregnant for the second baby and because of the financial difficulties, I started looking for somebody to help me.”

Daniel said that she was given N50,000 by the woman that brokered the transaction, 38-year-old Ngozi Nwaiwu, while the nurse, Kate Charles, who helped her during her delivery, got N30,000.

Nwaiwu, who also confirmed the sale to newsmen, said she was trying to help Daniel, considering her plight.

Police also arrested 22-year-old Blessing Chukwu, who sold her three-week-old baby girl, along with the alleged buyer, 40-year-old Chinasa Okpara.

Other alleged accomplices, Mrs Puphemia Omende and her husband, Kelechi, a medical practitioner, were also arrested.

Police alleged that the couple facilitated the transaction at their facility, Winnies Hospital, Okigwe, where the baby was born.

Okpara said that she paid N360,000 for the baby and blamed her action on her 13-year-old fruitless marriage.

Chukwu said she already had four children out of wedlock.
She said that she was given N190,000, for the three-week old baby, blaming her action on financial challenges.

They were arrested at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, where the baby had reportedly been on admission for the past three weeks.

The command also nabbed 23-year old Rose Chukwu together with her relation, Joy Sunday, while allegedly attempting to kidnap a little boy at Uzuakoli in Bende Local Government Area.

Police alleged that the duo kidnapped the boy at Township Primary School, Uzuakoli, after school and replaced his uniform with another shirt.

They were taking him away when someone alerted the police.
The suspects denied the alleged kidnap attempt, saying that they saw the boy wandering and felt that he missed his way and decided to help him to find his way back home.

No fewer than 22 other people, mostly young men, were arrested for various offences, including robbery, cultism and kidnapping.

Ogbizi expressed worry with the ease suspected criminals were being discharged by courts during prosecution.

“I am worried about the way the Ministry of Justice discharges suspected criminals. They should consult the police before releasing them.”

He said that suspected criminals, who got released during prosecution, return to society to continue with their criminality.

You‘re free to leave APC, VON DG tells Governor Okorocha

You‘re free to leave APC, VON DG tells Governor Okorocha

Mr Osita Okechukwu, Director-General, Voice of Nigeria (VON) and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has advised Gov. Rochas Okorocha to leave the party if he so desires.

Okechukwu, who spoke with newsmen at the APC national secretariat in Abuja on Monday, said that the APC would win the 2019 elections without Okorocha.

According to him, the actions and inactions of Okorocha have caused the APC more setbacks in the last four years in Imo and the South-East in general.

He said recent development that made the governor to lose at the party’s just-concluded congresses was a grand plan to reposition APC toward winning elections in the South-East.

“At least there are more than 60 political parties now, Okorocha is free to join any one of his choices, though, we are not forcing him to leave.

´´What we are saying is that we have taken the leadership out of his hands because he is playing God; so, what I am saying is that he is at liberty to leave APC.

´´But let nobody anywhere think that the APC will lose because we have retrieved the party from him. Mr President is going to get more votes, we are going to win more parliamentary seats, more governorship seats without him,” he said.

He noted that over 90 percent of the leadership and membership of the APC in the South-East were against Okorocha and his style of governance.

However, Dr Toe Ekechi, Convener of APC Restoration Coalition in Imo, said he would rather prefer that Okorocha remains in the party than leave.

“Rochas Okorocha is the governor of Imo. I think there is joy in heaven when one‘s lost sheep is found.

“We will be most joyous to see our governor Rochas Owelle Okorocha come back to the fold and work with us as a family to ensure the success of APC in 2019.

“That is not taking away the fact that he has the right to make political decisions that suit him, but in terms of what we want, we wish that we work with him.

“I will not want it to degenerate to that extent, not necessarily in the interest of the party but in his own interest and I think he is a smart governor and won’t want to contemplate leaving APC,” he said.

Offa Robbery: Saraki promises to reply police in 48 hours

Offa Robbery: Saraki promises to reply police in 48 hours

Senate President Bukola Saraki said he will send a written response to the allegations made against him by the Nigerian Police, linking him with robbery in Offa on 5 April.

In a twist to the police invitation to the man who is officially the number three citizen in Nigeria, the police backpedaled and rather than asking Saraki to report at Guzape Police station in the Federal capital of Abuja, now asked him to send a written response.

Opinions were divided across Nigeria over the invitation, following police statement that some five ringleaders of the Offa robbery indicted the Senate President and the Governor of Kwara State, Abdulfatah Ahmed.

According to the police, the chief of staff to the governor and the personal assistant to the governor have been arrested in connection with the case.

Saraki had earlier tweeted that he had asked his aide-de-camp to collect the letter of invitation from the police in respect of the allegations, as he wanted to honour the alleged invitation.

But four hours later, the police changed their minds about the invitation.

Saraki broke the news on his Twitter handle:

Bukola Saraki

@bukolasaraki
10h
I have just informed my ADC to get the letter of invitation from @PoliceNG in respect of the allegations raised yesterday — so that I can immediately honour the alleged invitation.

Bukola Saraki

@bukolasaraki
Following my earlier tweet, I have received the letter from @PoliceNG. They are no longer asking me to appear at any station, but to respond in writing to the allegations within 48 hours — which I plan to do.

On Sunday, the police announced they have invited Saraki over the 5 April multiple bank robberies in Offa, during which 33 persons, including nine policemen, were killed.

Police spokesman, Jimoh Moshood also announced the arrest of Mr. Yusuf Abdulwahab, the chief of staff to Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed and Alabi Olalekan, his Personal Assistant, Political, as investigations over the gruesome robbery deepened.

The police claimed five of the bandits arrested and who have made confessions during interrogations indicted the senate president.

The police therefore wanted to interrogate the senator, who is Number 3 person, in the order of protocol in the country. The police did not give a specific time they wanted Saraki to report.

“The Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki is being invited by the Nigeria Police Force to report to the Force Intelligence Response Team office at Guzape, Abuja to answer to the allegations levelled against him from the confessions of the Five (5) Gang Leaders, namely; Ayoade Akinnibosun, Ibukunle Ogunleye, Adeola Abraham, Salawudeen Azeez, Niyi Ogundiran and some of the other Seventeen (17) suspects arrested for direct involvement and active participation in the Offa Bank Robbery and the gruesome killing of 33 innocent persons which include some pregnant women and nine Police personnel”, Moshood said.

The police in the statement appeared to have dropped hints on what they wanted to ask Saraki about, as they claimed that the five men, who were the leaders of the bandits `’admitted, confessed and volunteered statements that they were political thugs of the Senate President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sen. Bukola Saraki and the Executive Governor of Kwara State, Alh. Abdulfatah Ahmed”.

The other hints dropped were the recovery of one Toyota Prado Jeep with Reg. No. 19KWGH belonging to the Personal Assistant, Political to the Governor of Kwara State and a Sticker plate number with inscription “SARAKI” “Kwara, State of Harmony”.

According to the police, “the Five gang leaders further confessed during investigation that they are political thugs under the name Youth Liberation Movement a.k.a “Good Boys” admitted and confessed to have been sponsored with firearms, money and operational vehicles by the Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki and the Governor of Kwara State, Alh. Abdulfatah Ahmed.”

Police explained why the Chief of Staff and the Personal Assistant to Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed were also arrested:

“A Lexus jeep GX-300 (Ash Colour) with a sticker plate number with inscription “SARAKI” “Kwara, State of Harmony” used by the gang leader (Ayoade Akinnibosun, during the bank robbery and the killing of the 33 innocent persons was taken to Government House, Ilorin on 16th May, 2018 where the sticker plate number with inscription “SARAKI” “Kwara, State of Harmony” was removed before another plate number (Reg. No. Kwara, KMA 143 RM) registered in the name of Ayoade AKinnibosun the Overall Commander of the Offa Bank Robbery was then attached to the vehicle to cover up the identity of the said vehicle.

“The exhibit vehicle was subsequently recovered from the premises of the Min. of Environmental and Forestry in Ilorin, Kwara State. While the sticker plate number with inscription “SARAKI” “Kwara, State of Harmony” removed from the vehicle was recovered from one Adeola Omiyale who drove the said Lexus Jeep to Government House, Ilorin immediately after the Bank Robbery.

“The Personal Assistant (Political) to the Executive Governor of Kwara State, Mr. Alabi Olalekan, who is privy to information that the Police is looking for the Lexus Jeep as an exhibit used in the Offa Bank Robbery… directed one Adeola Omiyale to relocate the Lexus Jeep to Government House, Ilorin. The PA (Political) is currently in Police custody and has made useful statement assisting the Police in further investigation into the case.

“A revolver pistol and pump action gun were recovered by the Police Investigation Team from the Personal Assistant (Political) to the Executive Governor of Kwara State, Mr. Alabi Olalekan’s Farm where he directed his brother to hide them after his arrest by the Police.

“In order to conceal evidence, the Chief of Staff to the Executive Governor of Kwara State, Mr. Yusuf Abdulwahab who has been arrested and taken into Police custody, arranged the removal of the sticker plate number with inscription “SARAKI” “Kwara, State of Harmony” from the exhibit vehicle.

Saraki responded some hours later, asking Nigerians to disregard the police allegation.

Saraki, in a statement by his media adviser,Yusuph Olaniyonu, described the allegation as baseless and another ploy by the Police to implicate him by all means.

“Let it be known that there is no way I could have been associated with armed robbery against my people,” Saraki said.

“This plot is concocted to embarrass me and, in the mind of the IGP, it is his own response after his refusal to honour the invitation by the National Assembly, headed me, for him to come and offer explanations on the rampant killings and violence across the country.

“Like the earlier one, this frame-up will also fail as I hereby state categorically that I have no link with any band of criminals.

“As a person who has utmost respect for the rule of law and all constitutional institutions, when the invitation from the Police is formally extended to me, I will be ready to honour it without any delay.

No APC Congresses Were Held In Kaduna State, Shehu Sani Insists

No APC Congresses Were Held In Kaduna State, Shehu Sani Insists

The Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial district, Mr Shehu Sani, has said that no congresses for the All Progressives Congress (APC) were held in the state.

Mr Sani said this during an interview on Channels Television’s politics programme, Roadmap 2019 on Monday.

According to him, while the congresses held in several states were marred with violence, he maintained that in the case of Kaduna State, there was no congress at all.

He said the APC had failed to set an example for other parties by organizing hitch-free congresses, a situation which he believes was a reflection of the party’s realities.

“What I can say of the APC congresses, is that it is reflective of the realities, the chaos, the troubles, the headaches and the heartaches of the party itself.

“The congresses were supposed to showcase internal democracy. It was also supposed to showcase that the party has come of age and it was determined to set an example and to inspire others to follow but what we have seen was that the congresses turned out to be the summation of its trouble,” he said.

Speaking further, Sani said that the party was “supposed to demonstrate that it is a good and better alternative and that it can control its members and carry everyone along.

“But the reality is that the APC as a party has failed to organize congresses that could have inspired others and in my own state there was virtually no congress.

“All that they did was simply to pretend that there was one and at the end of the day, write lists in a hotel and submit it to the headquarters as the list of delegates”.

He, however, noted that if the party refuses to address the grievances and the issues that were raised, “there will be trouble in the end”.

Speaking on other issues such as his revelation of senators’ earnings earlier in the year, which stirred a debate across social media, Mr Sani said it was aimed at encouraging transparency and accountability in governance.

He had revealed that Senators receive N13.5 million monthly as running cost, excluding a N700,000 monthly consolidated salary and allowance which they also receive.

Sani further stated that it was aimed at prompting the public to ask questions about the remuneration in other arms of government.

“There should be no grey areas in public office and now that Nigerians know what the members of the National Assembly are earning, they should also ask what the running cost of our ministers is, our governors, the head of government parastatals, presidential advisers, aides and men around the president. What is the running cost of the president and the vice president?

“It may be unpalatable and painful for the fact that I revealed our earnings or what we are being given every month but it has healed and has brought a closed chapter to the fact that people don’t know what we are actually earning.

“Now we know and now if you are doing some good to your people, they know very well that it’s not an act of charity, it is not also an act of philanthropy, that you are giving them what rightly belongs to them,” the Senator said.
