The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is seeking stronger partnership with the United Nations to build the capacity of its staff ahead of the 2019 general elections.
Speaking at a meeting with a UN delegation in Abuja, the INEC chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu highlights six critical areas where the commission need the intervention of the United Nations including voters education, electoral conflicts resolutions as well as capacity building for political parties.
The meeting is a follow up to an earlier request by the INEC chairman to the United Nations for assistance in the conduct of the 2019 general elections.
The INEC Chairman lists critical areas the commission seeks the interventions of the united nations in the coming general elections.
He said it is not the international community alone that INEC is seeking support, but the commission is also seeking the support of the judiciary, especially that of the court of appeal and the supreme courts for quick dispensation of elections-related litigations.
February 2019 has been proposed by INEC for the general election, as that date gets closer, political watchers are hoping that the whole process leading to the elections will be credible.
