Cambridge took both the men’s and women’s Varsity trophies with victories over Oxford at Twickenham.

The 136th men’s fixture saw the Light Blues resist a late Oxford fightback to retain the trophy with a 20-10 win.

Cambridge led 13-3 through tries from Chris Bell and Archie Russell before Will Wilson reduced the deficit, but Charlie Amesbury sealed victory.

In the earlier women’s match, Cambridge ran in two tries in each half for a convincing 24-0 win.

The men’s game was soured by a serious-looking injury to Cambridge forward Matt Watson, who required lengthy treatment on the field before being carried off receiving oxygen early in the second half.

It is understood he was conscious in the dressing room, but is being closely monitored by medical staff.

The victory for Amesbury’s side followed a 23-18 win over the Dark Blues in 2016 which ended a run of six-straight defeats.

A cagey first half finally came to life when Bell weaved his way to the try-line straight from a scrum before Conor Kearns’ penalty made it 5-3 at the break.

Russell, brother of Scotland centre Finn, burst through a couple of tackles to cross in the corner to extend Cambridge’s lead, but Wilson forced his way over to make it 13-10.

Oxford could not maintain the pressure in the final 10 minutes and when Amesbury was driven over, it ended any chance of a comeback.

Man-of-the-match Chris Bell told BBC Sport:

“It’s absolutely awesome. We talked last year about a new breed of players, a new ethic around the club.

“That really shone through last year and we’ve just carried it through, we’ve worked really hard and we’re absolutely delighted.

“It’s been a long four months or so and we’ll definitely enjoy ourselves.”

Following last year’s 3-0 defeat by Oxford, Cambridge returned to winning ways in the 31st women’s varsity fixture.

After a scoreless opening 37 minutes in torrential rain at times, Jess Gurney bundled over to open the scoring for the Light Blues.

Captain Lara Gibson added a superb second try moments later, collecting Alice Middleton’s chip over the top to race under the posts from 40 metres out.

Cambridge completed an easy victory after the break, scrum-half Kate Marks powering through to dot down, before Bluebell Nicholls completed the scoring in the corner.
